It is expensive to use good paper, these exchange costs are mounting up but we just keep doing them anyway! Have you tried wiping the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any residue? Or you can lightly sand it with very fine grain sandpaper (on a block to keep things flat). You could also use just a bit of tension release (a detergent like additive. Watercolorists sometimes use ox gall). ------------------------------ From: Charles Morgan Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 09:33:30 -0700 Subject: [Baren 23034] Re: please help I, too, have very little experience here. The only time I had this problem, I cured it by scrubbing the lino with a gritty bathroom cleaner ... Comet, I believe it was. Now whenever I carve lino, i first lightly buff it with very fine sandpaper to take the glaze off the surface and then I scrub it with Comet (or similar product). That seems to allow the ink to adhere and release smoothly. My only other thought is that there might be something on the surface of the paper. Hope these suggestions are not too naive .... Cheers ...... The sheep prints that I received are all mounted in a photo album that I keep on a table where i can share them with guests. I always buy the ones that are acid free. They are easy to use and allow people to look at the prints without any possibility of fingerprints or other types of dirt getting on the prints. It is inexpensive if you watch sales and buy up a few albums at a time. I have done this for some of the Baren exchanges as well, but there are certain sizes that do not fit into photo albums and in that instance for certain the cases Baren sells for prints are wonderful. It's much easier to toss them in the trash than to >send them out into the world with my name on them. Sue, If you are interested in the print exchanges, all I can say is 'sign up, sign up, sign up'. Exchange 17 was my first, and the print that I sent was only my 4th completed woodcut. I personally found the experience to be a great one. Working under a deadline, a specific theme to work on, feedback when it's all over, and of course, the ability to admire, study and enjoy original prints by other artists. I can't think of any better way to improve - I know that I'm still learning (with a long way to go) and found the experience to be extremely rewarding. As far as your own negative thoughts, that's one of the big challenges for most artists. I think it's always important to remember - when it comes to art there is no right and wrong. There will always be parts of prints that you really like and other parts that you know could have been better. When asked about my art, I used to have a bad habit of pointing out the parts of my work that I wasn't happy with - I've stopped doing that now, and I'm much happier displaying and promoting my work. I hope to see your name in one of the exchanges soon.
