Baren Digest Thursday, 2 October 2003 Volume 25 : Number 2393 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jan Telfer Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2003 21:24:27 +0800 Subject: [Baren 22956] Re: Beaten by a Duck!! Dear Everyone, This week is the Perth Royal Show.... not a big show, but thousands go through the gate each day and I heard we had 91 amusement rides! But we also cater for the country people when they "bring their produce to town" so to speak and there are events that include cattle judging of different breeds, horse trials, produce displays, Art, Craft and lots of wonderful "bits and bobs"...in other words, "thingamejigs"!! I went to the Royal Show yesterday. Won second prize in the Calligraphy Open Section with my Henry Lawson poem and got a Highly Commended in the Woodblock Section under "any Article not listed" with my woodblock print using the six carved blocks (and 19 printings) I did at Bootcamp last year..... called "Kimberley Colours" (You can see it on Graham Scholes website < http://www.woodblock.info/ >. I had a wonderful display position in the middle of the wall long case on a pedestal higher than everything else and the only hanging piece, so I was really pleased with that. My woodblocks were propped up with about and inch between in a wooden "toaster-like" box so that you could see the carving and of course they still had the coloured ink on them....I was beaten by an inlaid box and a carved decoy duck!!!!! One of the Calligraphy girls who was there demonstrating today rang me tonight as one of the senior stewards had asked why my print was in the woodblock section and not in the Art or the Calligraphy section (!! I think they know I am a calligrapher too) and Barb had to explain to her that is was actually printed from the carved wooden blocks, so I think that maybe even the wood judge didn't know "what to do with it"!! But if I put one in again next year then after a few years I might get some better recognition !! And my Steward printmaking friend in the Art Pavillion said the technique I used to print it would have been absolutely "lost" on this years judges in that section. I am glad I didn't put it in the Art section as the winners were sooooooo woeful! I got $20 and little certificate for the Calligraphy piece and a certificate for my woodblocks! But it was a lot of fun entering and by putting one in each year I might just educate the Perth public...even if it is in the wood section and not the Art section....I hope next year I don't get beaten by a wooden box or a duck!! Dear Jan, I enjoyed hearing about your experience in the Perth Royal Show. Congratulations on your Second Prize with your calligraphy and Highly Commended Prize with your woodblock! I too am a calligrapher and want to include it into my woodblock printing. I went to Graham's site to see your "Kimberley Colours" piece but couldn't find it there. Do you know how to locate it there? I'd like to see more of your calligraphy. Do you have a website? Thanks Jan! It needs to be misted before use, not soaked. It's a bright white paper. Additionally, I was taught to use gouache paint with rice paste for the "ink". I know these are cheap suggestions, but as a beginner, I've been happy with the price and also the results. Maybe when I get better I will feel like spending the big bucks...
