It takes layers upon layers of color beautifully - unlike many Western papers. I don't know enough about hanga at this point to have a preference, but whatever I am successul with the first time will no doubt become IT. Stay tuned - that is yet to happen - Cheers, (Julio I'm printing, I'm printing - honest, I just took enough time off to read the digest - that's all, I promise -) Sharri ------------------------------ From: "MPereira" Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 03:36:20 -0300 Subject: [Baren 22746] PAPER& PRINTING hI, ALL, here in my city we don't have a great variety of papers and the good ones are very expensive i have two hosho sheets (or kozo??) it's a very beautiful paper but i don't have courage to use it japanese papers they are - only for themselves - a great work of art what I learned most with Barens exchanges was not the quality of the paper but rather the dimensions of the paper which is great.....Before Barenforum and Dave's work I knew almost th dimensions A4, A3, A2, or the big never had thought in chuban ou hosoban so when that is a exchange -e even when i'm not in it - i always begin to study the dimensions of the paper i cut the paper and begin to work in it first with china ink - nanquim - or oil or acrilic or gouache the discover of these dimensions was someting new to me the red tan, too welll, i have learned very much with you all the enciclopedia is fantastic I wish i had discipline to sit and translate Baren and Dave's site to Portuguese - first as a pleasure Excuse me for writing so much. And what do you think about hand made paper? I have a friend artist here´- a very good artist ´that nakes paper. What do you think of that? Next exchange i participate i will use her paper Thanks very much for everything. Not knowing what the return fee would be, I sent a few dollars extra which you may use for any untoward expenses you may incur, So please don't send it back, I must say it feels strange to have completed all of my projects. As Charles says, signing up for an exchange is a great motivator, and by signing up one commits to following through -and always, regardless of the production quality, one learns something...even if it is that one is not quite the master of something that one could wish to be, or that if there was just a little more time, that last print edition could be vastly improved by chucking it and doing a replacement edition utilizing all the painfully gained new knowledge of what not to do... Oh well,."The moving finger writes/and having writ moves on/and all your piety nor wit/can lure it back again/nor all your tears wash out a word of it.." What next? Oh, yes, the new years card...Year of the Monkey...anyone know what the element sign is for this upcoming Year of the Monkey? Fire, water. earth...? I like what Margaret says about setting reasonable goals- it's too bad that I've had such a hard time being reasonable for most of my life...(at least that's what my kids keep telling me...as in "Mom, you're so unreasonable!" ) Welcome back, Maria. Your voice has been missed! I find it interesting that so many people have missed the puzzle deadline. There are also about a dozen or so who have missed the 2003 year of the Goat/Ram deadline. Seems I've got a little list and their names are not checked off, and their cards do not grace the album I made for that exchange. I took our friend from Brazil's name off because he left the List , but I have not seen evidence that the remaining 10 or so names have also cancelled the Forum List. If I am in error, I apologize. If not, catch up people! (Please?) I love getting those cards. You can find an introduction about the traditional Chinese woodblock print with prints copied from the Ming period at www.druckstelle.info/en/holzschnitt_china.htm (the result of a trip to China in April this year). Wouldn't it be nice if we had our own version of the "Good Housekeepers Seal of Approval" section? Let me explain: Moka Hanga papers as tested by: Dave Bull, Mike Lyon, Julio, etc... Western Style using Oil ink, using a press, tested by: John Center, Maria Arango, etc... Western Style using a Baren and oil inks: Western Style using water based inks: yada, yada, yada this could go on for: inks, barens, papers, carving tools, presses, etc.... Just an idea, then someone looking for a new paper can look at the site, seea what is "recommended" and "tested", you get the idea...... d. dew Sharri LaPierre wrote: >I don't know when the subject of paper preferences arose, but my >favorite for Western Printmaking is Somerset Satin. Dear Murilo, Even in my large city, there really isn't a nice selection of quality printing paper either. I think most relief printers mail order their paper ------------------------------ From: Bette Wappner Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 08:46:50 -0400 Subject: [Baren 22751] Re: Baren Digest V24 #2368 I must say it feels strange to have completed all of my projects. Carol, You're right...even though I'm new to exchanges, I agree. (although I've participated in other art exchanges). After each exchange, one does learn to some proportion. "The moving finger writes and having writ moves on and all your piety nor wit can lure it back again nor all your tears wash out a word of it.." Carol, this is very beautiful. Did you write it?
