Baren Digest Tuesday, 9 September 2003 Volume 24 : Number 2366 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barbara Mason Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 09:26:56 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 22703] good news and question Friends, It is raining in Oregon....what a joy to be back to normal! I have had a question for mall, has anyone had good results for hanga with any western paper? I know that Matt Brown uses rives heavyweight with with good results. Has anone else had success with a western paper? This question comes up once in a while and just thought I would ask again in case anyone has found success with a paper we have not tried. The trouble with being a printmaker is that it is darn expensive! I am using some oriental paper that is colored with large threads through it, printing with Akua Kolor and it looks pretty good (printed dry) It is fairly heavy and comes in about 6 colors. I hven't tried it for mokuhanga. It is 20x36" and $3 at the local art store. I am printing my calendar prints on it and think they are OK. It does not seem to have very much sizing on it but it is very pretty. I am such a sucker for pretty paper. It was actually pretty funny that day, since everyone who showed up to help, aka Kenneth and I, are both somewhat on the height challenged side. The enormity of the project caused us to call in some other help, and eventually we got it all up. As Barbara mentioned, people tend to stand in awe before the images. Thanks to everyone who contributed - it is an awesome exhibition. For your resumes, you can also add the Seattle Print Arts, Seattle, WA - which is where it will go next, and then to the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (VSAA) - Dec. & Jan. I am excited about hanging it at the school since their theme this year is collaboration - and this is certainly one. I have my students use Lenox for most hand printed work. We wet-pack it and use a kento. Works great. I learned so much about how and why you do what you do. Very Interesting and wonderful site! I will confess to using a couple of cheaper papers such as Somerset, Masa and Coventry to good effect with hanga- I had to keep the spray bottle at the ready with a fine mist spray and use about 3X the demonstrated methyl cellulose mixture but did a pretty good large scale bokashi??? on my 18"X24" prints--- my unrelenting gratitude to the KC crowd for starting me on this new course. I printed alternately a gouache and an oily mixture (shameless I realize- I only care about what WORKS!) with success- I will try to post soon- so 'in my view- western papers can work- I would use Japanese if I could afford them!!! but the techniques that David Bull imparted in KC were invaluable. While I have no allegiance to any particular ideology or history- I have found the KC workshop to be a real jumping off point in terms of experimentation. Thank you everyone. bbbbobette ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 01:31:45 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 22710] Re: good news and question 18x24" prints!!!!! Bobette, are you crazy? This would be so so very difficult to do! There is a woman who teaches at Mt Hood Community College and she does 3x5' prints with wonderful bokashi's on them...I have no idea how the heck she does it. If you had success, major congratulations! Best to all, Barbara ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V24 #2366 *****************************
