Baren Digest Saturday, 9 August 2003 Volume 24 : Number 2336 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Ramsey Household" Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 14:51:56 -0700 Subject: [Baren 22521] sad situation I think it is a sad commentary on the state of our society, that we are so polarized that we can not discuss ideas without getting angry. Carolyn ------------------------------ From: Aqua4tis#aol.com Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 17:55:21 EDT Subject: [Baren 22522] Re: sad situation our art is communication we air our views through our work georga ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Fri, 08 Aug 2003 18:12:29 -0500 Subject: [Baren 22523] update to 16x22inch woodcut I've updated www.mlyon.com/temp/2003_08.htm with a shot of the print this afternoon after completing the 14th printing of planned 26. But the color is getting so deep that I may decide to cut the printing short before all 26 blocks have been printed... I've completely dried and rewet the paper several times now, as I am repeatedly overprinting the same areas which eventually become too soft and wet while the rest of the sheet becomes too hard and dry. But it's turning out very well so far, I think! - -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com ------------------------------ From: Aqua4tis#aol.com Date: Fri, 8 Aug 2003 20:43:59 EDT Subject: [Baren 22524] Re: update to 16x22inch woodcut mike all of your work is amazing!!! georga ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Fri, 08 Aug 2003 21:21:32 -0400 Subject: [Baren 22525] congrats James, calyx magazine, Colleen OK, this is not a strictly woodblock post but it is print-related and not political. Congrats James on the article and pictures, that's great! and of course, well-deserved. and.. well, guess I'll "toot my own horn", as they say, I forgot whether I posted this already (hopefully not) but 10 of my prints (some woodblocks, some etching) are in the current issue of CALYX, which is a women's literary and art quarterly (looks more like a paperback book). Apparently one can find it in Barnes and Noble. For folks interested in submitting work, you can email calyx@proaxis.com for guidelines. FYI, they primarily use black and white images, so it's best to send them black and white or color images that work well in black and white. Last and not least, I have had the pleasure of meeting and sharing a press with our own Colleen Corradi at the Lower East Side Printshop. I'm a keyholder member there, and one day I noticed that the shelf next to mine which had been recently vacated now had a label saying "Colleen Corradi". It's been a pleasure speaking with her and seeing her work, which looks great! and hopefully if she has time I'm going to show her my extremely primitive (but it works!) setup for making solarplates. The contents may have been political in nature, but he made no political statements, just gave us the chanch to go see it. To view something is to become eduated, to be made aware of something that is happening. As far as non woodblock topics, if we stick pretty much to art, at least, than we should not be censored. I have seen things like solar plate discusssed on this forum and when it became a topic it was taken off list when deemed approrpiate by members, we seem to watch ourselves pretty well. I think the baren rules are fine and do not need revising. Geez if we can't talk about color theory or marketing or any other topoic that could relate than we are all loosing out. Remember we still have after 5 for those who want to chat about other things. Oh and Mike I loved you narrative showing the steps on your new large print, beautiful. Whether a person agrees with the imagery or concept is neither here nor there - any censorship of any artists work should be of concern to all of us. Since this work can in no way qualify as pornography, I have a more than a little trouble with e-bays inconsistent policy/rationale. It is always interesting to see how others handle portraits in black and white. As any who have visited my site have discerned, I have some strong feelings re. the shrub. I was very impressed with his techniques for rendering a face. I ask him to submit an image for the self-portrait posting, can't wait to see what we get. As for the politics, I do think it should be "about the art" and how its done...the message is secondary for me in most cases.
