Nothing 'official' ever decided George ...  There seem to be quite a 
number of print groups around Japan using the word 'baren' in their 
name, but I doubt any of them are 'forums', so I guess the best thing to 
do would be to call it 'barenforum' in katakana.

How about 'baren' in kanji + 'forum' in katakana?  Kinda marry the Japanese 
with the foreign that way?

Interesting idea ... but there _is_ no kanji for 'baren'; it's not a 
Chinese word ('kan ji' means 'Chinese character'). Various 'scholars' 
have tried to affix kanji to the word, usually using 'ba' as in horse 
and 'ren' as in 'ren sou' (a kind of Chinese plant); these are based on 
the proposition that early barens were made with horse hair/tail, and or 
material from that plant.

But a Japanese baren owes exactly _nothing_ to Chinese models - not the 
shape, nor the materials, nor the way it is used. As Michael has pointed 
out to us here before, if anything, it is based on a European pattern, 
and the word seems to have a Germanic origin. So my opinion would be 
that a 'katakana' version of the name would be an entirely appropriate 
way to spell it in Japanese.

(Apologies for these postings which don't make a whole lot of sense to 
those of you who know - and care - nothing of the Japanese language!)
