The only problem could be with the expense of big city hotels, as you imply. Maybe we could get you to come to Canada. Here in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Printmakers Martha Street Studio we have great facilities (http://www.printmakers.mb.ca). (This url doesn't work on MAC's--I've tried to figure out why why but haven't been able to out since I don't own a MAC). And for Americans costs would be significantly cheaper given the difference between the U.S. and Canadian dollars Myron At 01:33 PM 24/06/2003, you wrote: >good point myron oily would be a good thing as well as there are >as many tricks in printing with oil based ink as with water.. Winnipeg is a nice city, and it would be much cheaper than most places. Hawaii would be prohibitively expensive for many of us. My 2 cents worth ..... (Plus of course four-star hotels where they are currently putting up Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, who are making a film here.) No, Jeanne we are not tiring of hearing about the Summit, especially when Mike gave us the opportunity of "actually" being part of it with his "Silent Movie" and the photo album and the snippets from Members there, especially a thank you to Kent, if we joined in from afar we felt part of it. Could I suggest Perth Western Australia for Summit 2? Closer for David, too. It is absolutely beautiful here all year round and no snow.....March April would be perfect and I could always find somewhere to house a Summit..... and a trip to our North West or Central Australia.... good wine, beautiful scenery and good swimming. But then again, I'll travel anywhere! Add my name to Baren Summit 2. Thank you Mike we really did appreciate your effort. Back at home after a 22 hour trip from Kansas City; amazing how tightly they have jammed the seats together these days on those international flights ... But worth it to see so many friends over there! Can't say enough about how great an event the Summit was! When we were planning it, we really weren't sure if the 'open/unplanned' format would really work - shouldn't we schedule events/lessons/etc.? But it seems that our concerns were misplaced; the 'write your own curriculum' format worked very well. Mike's facility was just perfect - lots of space for everybody. I felt right at home - sleeping on the floor next to my workbench! I felt a bit sad that because I was only there for four days, I didn't have a chance to spend time working a bit with everybody. In fact things went by so quickly that I didn't even get a glimpse of some of the prints people were working on. Can't resist telling one little story ... Around 25 years ago, when I worked for a sheet music company in Vancouver Canada, I visited Kansas City twice. The Wingert-Jones Music Company there was in the same line of business as we were, and a couple of us spent a few days at their office/warehouse on a couple of occasions studying their business systems. I left the music business shortly after that, to have a go at becoming a woodblock printmaker here in Japan. Roll ahead 25 years ... here I am visiting Kansas City again, this time to attend our Summit, being held on the second floor of a old warehouse building in Kansas City, completely renovated by Mike ... You can guess what I'm going to tell you, right? Yep. It turns out to be the _same_ building! Mike bought it from the heirs of the music store owner after he passed away, and converted it to his studio. Of _all_ the cities in the US, and of _all_ the old buildings in that city ... here I end up sleeping on the floor in the same place that I visited 25 years ago ... Was this Summit pre-ordained, or what? Thanks again to all the participants who made it such a great event! Hi everyone, I just wanted to share a quick note to thank everyone for the wonderful experience I had at the summit. It was a little overwhelming to say the least. I can certainly feel for those undergoing summit withdrawal syndrome symptoms, since I myself am totally depressed to have had to go back home and back to work. I also understand Gilda's remark about sleep deprivation, which certainly took it's toll on me on my way home. I didnt arrive home until Tuesday night ..... left KC Sunday morning. (BTW gilda, no sign of the earring yet, but I will be cleaning out the Van tomorrow so hopefully I will find it there for you.) I am sure most of you will not believe it, but I am not a gregarious person normally and I am usually very awkward when it comes to meeting new people. Thankfully everyone was so special and made me feel welcome right from the start. I think that the current location was fabulous and any other location risks coming up short by comparison. I was frankly surprised by Kansas City as well. I took the opportunity to check out the archtecture, and fountains and yep even the odd club. I do think that it would be unfair to ask Mike to host such an event regularly. Thanks again Mike for the hard work and making us feel welcome. I think a future location should have an appropriate facility, a good mix of accommodations, and plenty of cultural sites. Plus a good assortment of restaurants. I also believe it should be affordable for those of us who lack unlimited funding to go to such events. Canada is a great country, and the exchange rate is almost always very favourable to those from the US. Winnipeg is a nice town, but lacks a variety of features that would enhance such an event, and frankly it is a very expensive place to fly into. I would suggest Toronto, since the city has multiple locations that would be highly suitable, I think it would be possible to rent facilities at Toronto's Open Studio printmaking center provides the following: http://www.openstudio.on.ca/ Open Studio provides artists with full production facilities and equipment for the following processes : etching, acquatint, woodcut, linocut, engraving, drypoint, mezzotint, wood engraving, stone lithography, photo plate lithography, screenprint, pochoir, monoprint, and computer assisted imaging. The Studio also provides photo process and digital equipment - scanner, computer, software and laser printer. Toronto is also blessed with many University Campuses that provide inexpensive housing in the summer, as well as a variety of Bed and breakfastes, hotels, motels, restaurants and museums and galleries...... you name it. Just a thought. Where ever it is I will not be driving again if it is over 400 miles......too much after such an intense week. I dont know that anyone will care, but I plan to post a short essay on baren after 5 of my thoughts on the summit, the ideas and inspirations that I got as a result of many conversations with people. I have so many things floating around in my head that if I dont write down my impressions I may just forget too many of them. My journey home alone provided inspiration for a few works, one being a sculpture I plan on titling "disintegrating man".... I will also try to find a way to post some pics online that I can provide a link to, since I have a couple photo's I believe no one else has, especially a few night shots of the fountain near main street and the Plaza. One final note..... Summit exchange!!! Of course I dont like the block I carved at the summit, but I do have an idea for an homage to Marco Flavio I like (his prints were great), or an idea involving a notorius mermaid..... John Furr Toronto ------------------------------ From: Myron Turner Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 06:29:04 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21916] Re: Home at last, future summit suggestion.... I think our American friends will understand the tenor of John Furr's comment about Winnipeg if I simply say that Toronto is the New York of Canada, i.e. nothing compares! (I know the syndrome, I grew up in New York.) Not that I object to Toronto. But I would expect Toronto to be pretty expensive. Open Studio is a wonderful facility; I saw it for the first time last year when I showed some work there: it has one of the largest etching presses you'll ever see. But it's rates for use are twice the rates of Manitoba Printmakers, for instance. I hope you realize that by recommending a location near your own home, you are virtually 'volunteering' to play host: arrange lodging, registration, materials, transportation, food, side-trips, communication, studio space, etc. etc. etc. It's a big and fun job, but expensive and extremely time consuming --- not a task to be lightly undertaken. Of course, from my perspective here in Kansas City, all those far-away places sound pretty good! And all I need do is show up! So keep those suggestions coming in!! :-) -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V23 #2272 *****************************
