Can we make a "mini" portfolio case, Barbara? Is there anyone else who would like Exchange #18 to be a very small print on very small paper? That could be a "jewel" of a suite! If anyone else likes the idea of a very small paper size, please reply with your ideas about what the image and paper dimensions ought to be for #18 (sign-up for #18 will begin July 1 and prints are due by November 1)... Mike Never thought that a rejection could be such a winner. Congratulations!!! A Mini print exchange sounds like a great idea, I will vote for that one. And if there are no takers on the coordinator for Exchange # 17, I would be happy to take it on. I already have coordinated one exchange early on and it was really not that much work, but interesting. I think the one thing you have to have is lots of room for sorting and stacking, etc. That I have. Horacio, amigo, your prints are fantastic works of art, I have loved the way you are able to express the human condition, you will be missed at Baren.....let's hope out paths will cross again someday..... Sharen, I missed Claude's opening yesterday, do you have any date/time info on the rest of the events she will be appearing at ? Hi Mike, congratulations on your recent "rejection", those three prints you send in are "little" gems...I remember when you posted about them and your technique a while back..I said to myself all three of these are winners. Any rationale for them being left out of the exhibit ? Perhaps another case of a juror "prejudice" ? Hurray for Tony Kirk.....Roualt & Beckwith or companion prints....it does not get any better than that !!!!! Dave, thanks for the link to Mr. Hishiki...fabulous prints.....70 years old ? ...good, that means I have plenty of time left to improve on my printmaking {;-) Mike, I am all in favor for a mini-print exchange for #18, great idea ! To me it says an artist needs to accept rejection with grace. Opinions do vary so. Once I had a watercolor rejected from a juried show and had the one main judge tell me he would have awarded it a top prize, a weird feeling huh? You have received an interesting and certainly well deserved honor. I think you can do whatever you want, I would take one from the end of the edition, say #20/20, and work backwards. So that you went #20. #19 and so on. That way you would have your changed prints in order backwards. Then write on the certificate that you changed it. I think that is all you would need to do....the printmaking police will not come and get you....you are really and truly in charge of your own work! Mike, I think we could get a small portfolio, as long as it is not too small. Sometimes it is more work to make things small...how about 3x4" or so. Would that be small enough? I will ask Dave, he will know if we can do this. Is there a standard small size for prints? Lets not get crazy here, I don't want to work 2x3 inches.......unless it is a part of a larger image and I just cut it in fourths......How good are your eyes anyway????? Obviously better than mine! I have been looking at a book on printmaking from Koyoto and I see in these prints that the lines are all fairly wide...they are contemporary prints. I think I could do these wide lines, I am liking these. They are very graphic, sort of like Roualt meets Japan. Isn't printmaking wonderful? So many, many ways to do the same thing. Best to all, Barbara John and Michelle Morrell wrote:If you have an edition of prints and you want to alter by hand one of them (after the printing process), how do you deal with that in terms of numbering? Recently I altered a print for a special but local occasion. I used an artist's proof and noted it was altered by hand work on the authenticity certificate. ------------------------------ From: slinders#attbi.com Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2003 01:17:22 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21238] Exchange members, Say hello! Hi, everyone! We had an unusual occurrence in Exchange 16 during the last month or so. My 'welcoming letter' to our exchange 16 members 'bounced' from one person on the list. After several tries at contacting this person I wrote to Mike who was able to give me some information on the e-mail server this person used, a school district. I couldn't reach the school district through the server either. I began a telephone 'hunt' which took several calls. Finally I spoke with the person, who reported that the signing up for the exchange was done as they were 'surfing our site' and they had no intention of participating. By this time much of our exchange time had already been spent. Thankfully we had folks on the waiting list with blocks ready! This is a long story to remind new members to Baren exchanges, or those who only lurk, that they are valuable to us, and we'd like to hear from them, if only to say hello. I will also remind people to read the 'rules' of our exchanges, and suggest that especially if you are wanting to participate in an exchange you say hello and let us welcome you! Exchanges are such a special part of Baren, and I know that you'll be as enthusiastic about them as the rest of us are! We'd like to know you better! It was wonderful to meet Claude Aimee yesterday! Any of you who have had this experience know how incredible it is to have corresponded and exchanged prints with someone for a long time, and then to be able to hear their voice, see their face! It's so amazing! (You KNEW she'd have a great Montreal/French accent!) She has a terrific show...all CATS! at the River Forest, Illinois, library, April 4-29, 2003. What a lovely building/neighborhood! She then gave a slide presentation and had a portfolio review at the Oak Park Art League. Tomorrow evening she'll have a printing demo at Expression Graphics, Oak Park. Photos to follow! This is not an insurmountable problem--although it not worth bothering with unless it becomes a repeat problem. You'd need to have the sign-ups done through a simple script that would check the names of signers-up against a membership list.\ This wouldn't stop someone from becoming a nuisance member, subscribing just to do a bogus sign-up for an exchange, but it would make it more work to be a nuisance.Myron Finally I spoke with the person, who reported that the signing up for the exchange was done as they were 'surfing our site' and they had no intention of participating.  By this time much of our exchange time had already been spent.
