Baren Digest Thursday, 3 April 2003 Volume 23 : Number 2180 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Womack" Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 05:49:05 -0800 Subject: [Baren 21198] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2179 I haven't receivd any answer to inquiries from Barbara, so I am writing to the list. I received the 20 sheets of Yamabuki paper that I ordered from Woodlike Matsumura, in good condition. However, I have not yet received the Asuza that I ordered. ------------------------------ From: G Wohlken Date: Wed, 02 Apr 2003 10:30:35 +0000 Subject: [Baren 21199] Sharpening Tips, Newsletter and the Dilemma of Too Many Projects I appreciate the warnings on tool sharpening straight from people who have had some bad experiences. This forum has been helpful in many ways. Thanks. Also, I hope we can get some good sharpening tips (from those who are good at it) at the Kansas City Summit. Julio, the newsletter is well put together and extremely attractive with photos and artwork. Thanks to everyone who participated in this one. Longingly I look at the Exchange #17 sign-up and realize there's no way I can participate after having signed up for sheep, calendars and a body of new work I have to prepare for a local show in October. But the subject of War and Peace is such a good one I'm entertaining a thought I could make a print on it for Swap Shop. At least with Swap Shop we don't have to print so many. That's what takes so much time for me since I don't use a press and I prefer oil inks which take longer to print. I don't know how people can do all the exchanges that come up, plus do their own work. Also, for me, I guess I need breaks in between to breathe fresh air to create a balance of some kind. Seeing others' accomplishments, however, raises admiration in me, and offers something to strive for in time management. You did not send the order number so I have to hunt for it and with our brand new grandchild I let things slide a bit. Will do it immediately. I've been on the list for several months, and only written one reply (off-line). My background is photography and printmaking. I have my BFA in photography, but I also had a strong interest in printmaking and a love for the processes that make an artist so connected and involved in the making of an image. A loss of darkroom space recently has renewed my desire to make prints again, so I've been making preliminary sketches, bought supplies and I'm gearing up to carve and pull some prints as soon as I can clear some garage space and the temperature stays above freezing in the Chicago area. I know, excuses, excuses. Besides introducing myself to the list, I also have another reason behind my post today - -- I work for a textbook publisher and am currently working on a World History textbook for High School students. I am a photo researcher, so I research, edit and secure appropriate photos to use throughout the book. One of the editors of the book had the great idea to feature the woodblock printing process in a Unit that includes Japan. Besides showing some "iconic" woodblock samples (i.e. "Under the Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai), we want to include 4 or 5 images from the woodblock printing process. I've seen the numerous photo examples posted in the Baren encyclopedia by David Bull, and this is the type of idea I think will work for this feature. For those people with a passion for printmaking or who've worked on a project like this for a class, workshop or book, you may have photos like the ones I will describe below. I would like to ask Baren members to please contact me if you think you could possibly contribute to this textbook feature. The main images we are going to use for the feature are: - - photo of the act of carving a keyblock or the main block or a multi color print - - photo of a carved Keyblock or main block that shows black or dark ink/pigment (ready to print) - - photo of the resulting pulled image from the block above (possibly showing a second color as well, to combine a couple steps in one photo) - - photo of the final printed image I guess I need to make mention of the potential subject matter of the print. This is a textbook for high school World History students (not art students unfortunately) so the image has to be appropriate for the reader. No violence, nudity, guns, overtly political or sexual content, etc. I don't make the rules, I just find the images that fit the rules. In keeping with the time-honored tradition of publishing, the deadline for this feature is coming up very quickly. If you feel you may be able to contribute photos for this feature, and submit slides or high-resolution image files by the end of April 2003, please contact me via my work contact information below. Payment for the use of the photos will be negotiated when the photos get final approval in the textbook, and credit will be given to the artist and/or photographer. Thank you very much. I promise not to post more work related messages - only printing messages from now on. My apologies if this isn't the proper forum for my research request.... the Baren list was the first thing that popped into my head when the editor asked if I could get something good for the woodblock printing feature. (ummm yeah, I think I know a good source...... I though to myself!) The Yamabuki came in record time and is very large and beatiful and in good condition. And it was wrapped magnificently. I guess the Azusa paper was wishful thinking that will have to wait for the next paycheck or two. Jean Womack ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V23 #2180 *****************************
