Baren Digest Sunday, 2 March 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2146 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mjbohlen#crosslink.net (Real Name) Date: Sat, 01 Mar 2003 09:20:10 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20890] Re: calendar Dear Julio, Barbara, and other members, First of all, I don't know how I became a member of this wonderful site, but I'm glad I did. I have some questions-- How do I get to the Baren Mall if I wish to purchase paper? I read about the "encyclopedia", and the letters I read are getting me more and more excited about trying Hanga, again, what is the address? In Oct 1999, I was a Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Scholar for three weeks in Japan. This is sponsored by the Japanese govt. to bring teachers from the US over to learn about the country and school system. We spent 5 days in Tokyo and then I had a free weekend. I had never even had a passport before and I took my phrase book, guide book and a train to Kyoto where I spent the night in a Japanese hotel (not for tourists) and went to the Japanese Bath. I walked around Kyoto and took buses to visit numerous sites and later went on to Hiroshima before returning to Tokyo. While in Kyoto, a woman invited me into her home for tea. We spent about an hour laughing, giggling, pointing to phrases in my books and as I was leaving to go back to the train station and putting on my shoes, she dissappeared only to return with two little gifts. She had her 16 year old son walk me to the train as I was completely turned around at this time and had no idea where I was. I returned to Tokyo and then our group of 200 teacher from all over the US were divided into 10 groups, each group going off to a different prefecture (state) to visit schools, government offices, and cultural places. I went to Hajiochi City in the prefecture of Tokyo for 10 days. During this trip we each spent an evening and a day with a family. The father in my family was retired from teaching sculpture at a HS and his wife taught English at a middle school. I guess the main reason I am telling you this story is that my hosts took me to the most wonderful print exhibit at the Print Museum. He was well known ther and we were treated royally. He procured a magnifying glass for me to look more closely at the prints. I was blown away at the hairwidth lines, colors and all. They purchased the catalog for me and i look longingly at it from time to time. I really want to try my hand at this technique. What is the bare minimum I need to begin and where should I purchase my supplies? If there are any teachers out there K-12, who would like more info on applying as a Fulbright Teacer Scholar, let me know and I'll send you the info. I am sorry for rambling and I guess maybe this should go to "after five"???? I haven't quite figured this all out yet----is there a page with all the rules of membership etc.? Anyway, I have been printing off all the letters that seem to have hints that I could use once I get going and keeping them in a folder.. Thanks for all your help and any imput. Best of luck with the show. It is so nice that the Manhattan Boro President's office supports art. Bea, I am totally envious of your trip to the Munakata show with Ruth Leaf! I saw wonderful ones at Japan Society a couple of years ago. His prints are so direct and impressive in their scale. He has managed to stretch the traditional moku hanga printing technique to do something new and personal, while remaining deeply connected to the past. (I am thinking of his big goddesses here.) Thursday at 4:30 I will give a talk about my show "Transmutations: Mind, Body, Pixel, Paper" at Franklin and Marshall College's Dana Gallery, Steinman College Center (717) 291-3879. If anyone is in the area, please come by! The show includes woodcut and digital work. On my way back to NYC, next Friday, I will stop in Philadelphia to see the Mutter Museum, on the recommendation of our own James Mundy. best, April www.aprilvollmer.com ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 11:09:49 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 20893] Calendar project update Louise, I think you will hear a large scream from all over the country thinking of making "high color copies" of prints.....I think all of us would far rather sell our work for less that to have it digitally copied........After all we are giving it away free for exchanges and for the archives....so cheap for a calendar for sale to all our friends on Baren who will no doubt give them as gifts to people who will appreciate them while fattening the baren coffers is not such a bad thing! And a very HUGE thanks, Kat, for all the work you did to get these fun prints to my mail box!
