Also if you work fast and apply quickly I think you have less chanch of overload. I thought signup for #16 had not begun? I thought it was the first of April, right when i get back and have not got my computer up and running?? Congratulations to all participants, a very exciting group of prints. Just got my set this morning and had to wait till arriving at the office to open the package. I think the special print size was ideal for this exchange. Pat...what an awesome colophon ! ...who did the front printing ? There are so many wonderful designs and some very well executed prints....just reading the number of blocks/impressions used by some participants....wow ! Wow ! WOW ! It be interesting to have those coming to the KC Summit bring their "hanga" blocks with for discussion and work. I know I need lot of help getting down a smooth bokashi...so I'll be working on my print here and at KC till I get it right !!!! Big thanks to Kat Pukas for collating and coordinating #15 and to Mike Lyon for all the behind-the-scenes work. Bravo bareners....fifteen exchanges completed....Who could have imagined ? thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 11:52:18 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20881] From Bea Gold For some reason the server didn't send this on through - #15 came today just as we were leaving for a visit to the doctor. My husband and I sat enthralled in the doctor's office looking at the prints. They are wonderful! Thanks Kat for a great coordinating job and thanks everyone for taking the hanga challenge. Great designs, great color, love the size. I'm meeting Ruth Leaf at the LA County Museum (LACMA) on Sunday, March 2, at noon for the Munakata exhibit. Last chance to see it here so if anyone can meet us please do. Let us know so we will wait for you. http://www.lacma.org/ =20 To add to the fun check this out www.lamarathon.com Bea ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII#aol.com Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 15:32:00 EST Subject: [Baren 20882] Re: C. Here is some general info so far based on your discussion & suggestions: We are looking to produce at least two calendars (24 participants). More calendars if the response is large. The success of exchange #15 has me thinking one calendar "all-hanga" and one calendar all "oily". This is NOT one technique vs the other, me just thinks the calendars would look better with prints done in similar style together. A second option would be themes calendars....floral, animals, music, nudes, landscapes, nudes, people, nudes. Open for discussion. Each participant would get back two "hanga" & two "oily" calendars free for their trouble. If each participant contributes 50 prints....that would leave 26 calendars of each type (52 in total) to sell thru the mall to the general list. Too few ? Who is our market ? Do we want to print 60-75 prints each ? Everyone agrees that around $24.95 would be a good price for this type of hand-printed work ? Participants can purchase more calendars if so desired. We may have to put a limit on purchases if the demand is great. Open for discussion. Signup to begin later in March once the other details are in. You be able to request type of calendar you want to work on and preferred month(s). In case of any conflicts I would approach participants and make final decision. Deadline for delivering prints is October 1st, calendars delivered & available for sale thru the mall in early November. Participants pay for sending the prints to the coordinator (me) and for return shipping of their four calendars. There may be a small cost to cover pre-printed calendar forms. All profits towards the general barenforum.org fund. thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 20:10:55 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20885] offsetting hanga Maria, there are so many variables in hanga that it's hard to tell what you had going on, but here are a few possibilities...you may be aware of all these already, but here goes... - - you may have had too much of everything on the block - with hanga it's really more like you're dyeing the paper, the pigment is pushed into the fibers rather than on top, and you really need only a very thin layer for printing. - - Another possibility, your paper may have been a bit too wet, making it more possible for offset. Remember, the paper is to be simply like a damp sponge, not soaking wet. - - one thing which I do to avoid this possibility is to put a piece of newsprint in between each print. I do this also if it feels like the paper is just too damp altogether. Have fun Lynita and Matt, wish I could be there!!! best regards Sarah ------------------------------ From: "Maria Diener (aka Arango)" Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 17:42:00 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20886] hanga thanks! Thanks everyone for on and off list suggestions and answers to my hanga questions. Yes, likely I had everything too wet, too much, too-too!! As Barbara also suggested, the dryness here makes things a bit weird because the paste and pigment dry out fairly quickly and working time is greatly reduced. Probably a good thing as I hear beginners use too much moisture. Anyhow, I will keep on tryin' Maria <||><||><||><||><||><||> Maria Arango Las Vegas Nevada USA www.1000woodcuts.com <||><||><||><||><||><||> ------------------------------ From: "Jean Womack" Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 20:42:11 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20887] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2144 The print exchange #15 was awesome! I think it has great teaching possibilities for hanga. Kat you did a wonderful job of nagging us to get the prints in on time. I solve the offsetting problem by blotting the prints with a paper towel immediately after printing. Jean Womack ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2003 00:32:57 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 20888] calendar Julio, I think this calendar is a good idea....lets see how many people sign up and then we can adjust the amount of prints. 50 is ok with me, I can do that. Will the due date be in October??? I think it would be great to have more money for the treasury...so far we have paid for the site and mall for the last two years, almost $900 and we have about 100 sheets of Yamaguchi paper here in Oregon that the baren owns as well as about a dozen assorted cases. We have about $300 in the bank. We are starting to be a real company here. My goal is to get all the mall stuff logged into the data base to bring to Kansas City so I can give an actual report to the group that will be there. Amazing what can be done with all volunteer effort...if we were charging for time we would be thousands of dollars in the hole! So thanks to eveyone who works so hard on the behind the scenes stuff for Baren. There are a lot of man hours, from Dave, myself, Wanda, Gayle, Julio, Jim, John, Bea, Mike, Maria, all the exchange coordinators...did I miss any of the council? If one person was doing this it would be a full time job.
