Baren Digest Wednesday, 26 February 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2142 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "carolwagner" Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 06:28:39 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20849] Baren Digest V 22 #2141 Dear Julio, You wrote, <....can anyone think ahead to....monkeys ????> Yep. Already have an image in mind, in fact I've been monkeying around with it in my sketch pad since the first of January... To anybody out there, (Sorry, there's an echo in here) Has anyone used the new Dan Smith water based inks for Moku Hanga? Cut! Print! It's a joy to run through these images on screen (making me yearn for high-speed internet access) and how lucky for those of you who have the set in the woolly flesh. Will there really be 50+ of these at some point? Well Done, if you'll pardon the cooking reference in the context. All the past "chuban" exchanges have followed 22X27cm (or 8.5 X 10.5").... not 7.5 X 10". Probably not a big issue but it could be a problem with the cases (or if you already started work on the old size). The standard sizes were put in place so that people could work way ahead in time always knowing that the chuban & oban exchanges would follow standard dimensions. Mike Lyon is away till the 27th so look for more info on this upon his return. Thanks to everyone for the sharpening discussion. For my #15 print I only used three traditional cutting tools and an awl(to pick/dig at the 13 snowflakes under the crow)...the tools were a japanese toh (knife) and two aisuki clearing chisels (1.5mm & 6.5mm). I must admit to not be very good at sharpening, so every bit of ideas help, thanks. Yes, Janet...52 is the number of goats/sheep we are looking for...a number of people promised to send late horsies (me included)and are on this year's list with that promise over their heads.....the new signup list for monkeys (2004) will go up sometime in October...I think that's plenty of notice for everyone to get their horsies & goats in by then ......"Well Done" ? you mean like a lamb roast ? Ha,ha,ha..pretty funny. More on the calendar project soon...any additonal discussion about how yould like the calendars to shape up ?...stay tuned... thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: "Gilda Zimmerling" Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 9:12:59 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20852] exchange 15 I received my prints from exchange 15 yesterday . I created my image for 8.5" x 10.5" and have had to try and figure out a way to do it smaller. If we can go ahead and use the bigger size, my problem disappears. So, which size is the correct size please? d. dew From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Subject: [Baren 20851] Re: Alert for #16 exchange participants >I was looking over details for #16 and noticed the paper size on the info >page >has changed from the old standard. So, which size is the correct size please?" I would think that the old standard of 8.5 X10.5 is right, but not sure why it was changed, could just be a typo. Smaller is not a problem, but Mike has the final word on this and he won't be back till the 27th...perhaps Sharen or Barbara can give us some input ? Barbara, did we order cases already from the maker and at what dimensions ? Sharen, was the paper size for the exchange discussed ? They are useful for clearing out those larger areas. I, too, have trouble with arthritis (Dan may have to wait a year or to for this!) and some days my hands hurt so much I couldn't cut melted butter, let alone wood. Those days it is difficult to even hold the motorized tool, but it is at least possible. After burning up 3 dremel tools, last year I invested in a Fordham. It is so much quieter, I can still hear the radio when using it. And, can hold onto it better on the painful days due to its configuration. All of the bits are interchangeable. I also use the motorized tool on metal plates - it is not only for wood, you know ;-) Sharri ------------------------------ From: "Maria Diener (aka Arango)" Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 11:14:34 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20856] more on exch15 And did I mention the wonderful classy top-a-da-line colophon? So do your prints this size and if you already started them at the smaller size, that will work also, just no larger.
