Baren Digest Thursday, 20 February 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2135 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bill H. Ritchie, Jr." Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 08:02:10 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20786] Congress in Bulgaria Dimitris, thanks for starting this thread. I hope we can "loop" it back to printmaking, and this is my two cents worth. I agree with Marilyn Smith that participation in creative mathematics and the arts should be interesting. To what she already said, based on her own true story about her daughter's experience, I would add that the element of TIME can figure into this matter. And the only TIME based visual art, in my humble opinion, is printmaking. We design and craft our blocks as though they are musical instruments to be "played" out in the printing. We design and craft blocks, stones, stencils and metal plates (and, yes, we even bring luminous energy into the processes sometimes) as one-of-a-kind, solo instruments, or we create whole orchestras. Then, we print. And we print. We practice, we try and try, we fine-tune both the craft and the printing. And it doesn't stop there! Numerous owners then take possession and care of the prints. Some even come to the maker and purchase the blocks! So TIME gets into this art form the way time gets into calculus, I think. I'm one of those unfortunates who didn't fit the way math was taught in schools, and I am still recovering. The interest in math shown throughout the history of art is a signal that better math and science education is just around the corner. Let's help, as artists, get the US Education system more aware of this through our ability to entertain the idea, and make the idea entertaining. - - bill Professional Career Site: www.seanet.com/~ritchie First Emeralda Portal Site: www.artsport.com Bill's Virtual Art Gallery & e-commerce Site: www.myartpatron.com Experimental Free Site: www.freeyellow.com/members/videoprint Snail Mail: 500 Aloha #105, Seattle 98109 e-mail: ritchie#seanet.com ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII#aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 10:57:24 EST Subject: [Baren 20787] finished blocks Maria i finished you block and it will be in the mail shortly and the key block for exchange 16 is done as well. looking forward to seeing the hanga prints john center ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V22 #2135 *****************************
