Baren Digest Sunday, 19 January 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2100 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 09:45:00 +0000 Subject: [Baren 20475] Hanga report, paper grain, and a welcome Maria, I appreciate your testimony re the hanga print. I too will probably see the blotches, though I, like you, "think" I have it carved deeply enough. It's deeper than I usually do and has proven to print better than ever in oil (I tested one) , but I know what's coming and it's probably the reason I find hanga not to be as rewarding for expressiveness since in hanga the expressiveness is not in the cutting but in the printing, though I admit I love to dig into that wood with my tools. >my main problem seemed to be something I didn't think about >and that is that I didn't really carve deeply enough for this method (ergo >the blotchiness thereof). > Thank you, Dave, for answering my paper grain question, and Julio I did try tearing and it seemed to tear equally stubbornly both ways! >No, the grain on a large sheet of Japanese paper like that always runs >along the short side. Welcome, Ivelina. You've come to a good place for learning! There are many degrees of skill here, and usually someone has the answer. Also check out the "Encyclopedia" -- the link is on the main webpage for Baren. Is there a website where we can go to see your work online? Also, don't worry about your English. You are doing fine with it! If you were to ask people in England, for instance, they would say we people who live in the United States don't speak it well at all! >I would like to take a part of your site and the >discusions with a big pleasure. > Gayle in Ohio ------------------------------ From: "nancy osadchuk" Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 08:12:19 -0700 Subject: [Baren 20476] #15 Exchange Julio...thank you, thank you......but I didn't have 'twin goats'..only a single Big Horn. .Did you mean Jan's wonderful sheep? ------------------------------ From: "carolwagner" Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 08:39:53 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20477] Thank you, and a welcome April, It was my pleasure. I have learned so much from you and others on this forum, that I wanted to give something back! Ivelina Welcome to Baren- there are some wonderful people on this list who will be of great help to you, in particular, Mike Lyon and Julio Rodriguez are pretty awesome, and of course John Amoss, who recently collaborated with Baren founder David Bull on a magnificent print. Many of us are just learning to do Japanese printmaking and will be learning along with you.It is a pleasure to have you added to the conversation. Maria and John Center What perfection! Oh yes, the joys of wet printing, dripping sumi all over the place, varied grays, sometimes a nice black...how much paste/ink this time? Oh, or is it no paste with just sumi? Oh well, at least I don't have Maria's four footed assistants supervising. As this first effort is almost done (I can't afford any more paper sacrificed on this project so you all will get this offering 'as is, warts an all') they'll be mailed soon. And John, I know you are having a good time in Las Vegas. Maria is just so feisty/funny, energetic and enterprising, that who could not have a good time visiting her? There are many good tips and lots of nice people here. If you want to show something, put it on the web and send the address as this site won't take attachments. I am surprised so many of you are already finished printing #15...I am done carving and the printing is starting. Maria, you made my day, I really laughed at your stress. It always seems so easy when we are talking about it and so hard when we are doing it. I will be agonizing for the next couple of days, I have no kitty kat helpers and my grandchild is too young. Guess I will have to take responsibility for any messes on my own! Best to all, Barbara ------------------------------ From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Sun, 19 Jan 03 20:13:05 +0800 Subject: [Baren 20479] Re: Umbrellas in Japanese prints Dear Barbara, >Your exhibit in Perth sounds wonderful, you said we might see it >online...where???? The Gallery East prints can be viewed on www.galleryeast.com.au I am sure many of these have been reprinted too, as the colours are so bright and fresh, even through the gallery windows. I will list the names of the artists when I have been there on Wednesday..... to be continued! I did get some from my chemist (Pharmacist) this week thank you and it works a treat, but I am all set now to do my Hanga #15 with safe ol' Windsor & Newton. Yippeeeeee!!! After I do this edition, I will try with my new set of blocks for another edition I have waiting to be done, but not under time limitations and the stress factor. Yes, Kat #15 will be coming later this week or early next week. Not good weather for Hanga! Temperatures are still soaring here and bush fires burning, but not as bad as they had in Canberra (on the East Coast of Australia) yesterday 4 people dead and 400 homes lost... but it didn't quite get to Parliament House!
