Baren Digest Wednesday, 1 January 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2080 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Robert Canaga Gallery" Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 13:31:13 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20253] Re: water based inks Hi. I have been using Lascaux screenprintingpaste(Siebdruckpaste) for years for blockprinting, monotype, et. al. and love it.I can use pigment on the block, mix gouache, WC, acrylic, chalk, Sumi...any thing ws will work. It stays open for three days on the ink plate, rolls up wonderfully, wipes easily, cleans up with no fuss, dries on the paper in a few hours, and best of all, is non toxic. All my students use it now and are pushing the boundaries even further(as students are supposed to do). It works better than any rice paste I ever used for mixing on the block, it wont dry out and ruin your paper with dry pulls. It is not cheep or easy to find. Savoir Faire out of Sausalito imports it and you can get a list of dealers who carry it. I have prints done in Sumi as a roll up that look as good or better than oil. Other than not planning ahead and having enough on hand, or deciding one doesn't like the result on a particular paper I don't know why a person would want to change. But if they did, does this make for a second state situation? My herd of Big Horns should be in the mail this week...have so far received Frank Trueba's very delightful serigraph. Happy New Year to all.......Nancy O. ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 17:49:12 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20255] ink, goats etc Hi all, John, I am sad to say that my card from you arrived "goatless" - perhaps some postal worker is now the proud owner of your print! Carol, I suggest you try Susan Rostow's Akua Kolor - it's a far superior product to Createx and you don't have to mix any gum arabic, etc with it. It can also be used for monoprinting, etc. Her website is www.waterbasedinks.com. Of course, to each his own, but I believe you will be happy with the results of this ink. If you tell her I sent you, she will most likely be happy to send you a little sample of 4 colors or so for you to try. Happy new year all, Sarah ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 17:51:48 -0500 Subject: [Baren 20256] inks again ooops, sorry for the double posting, but it's short. Charles, you are in Canada, right? I believe that Graham has a source for pigment dispersions there - I have a great source for them here in NYC in USA - contact me offline if you want that info. best Sarah ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 15:21:08 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 20257] Editioning questions again Nancy, I don't think it is a second state as that denotes a change that is more substancial than the paper, usually a change in the plates....but you could note on the back of the prints that 1-23 were printed on hosho and 23-75 were printed on Yamaguchi or so on. This would be good info for collectors and museums to know when you are dead and famous....they want information....they can never have enough. I am not the only voice here, what do others think about this? Should it be a second state? Best to all and Happy New Year Baren! Barbara ------------------------------ From: "Maria Diener (aka Arango)" Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 15:51:40 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20258] RE: Editioning questions again Ohhh, a little spicy question to end the year... Of course we sloppy amateurs do this all the time...too many rules spoil the art, I dare say. I have: - -changed papers in mid run because I ran out and completed the edition in a similar paper - -changed papers many times throughout the run just to see what the print would look like in different papers - -made special runs of one print on hand-made paper and the rest of the edition on standard printmaking paper - -made one or two prints on a special paper by customer request - -printed some of the edition in 2000 and finished the edition in 2002 in another paper from another batch as the whim struck In none of those cases did I make a second state or wrote anything in the back. In no case did I have some frantic collector chase me down to demand the "correct" paper for my print. Collectors and museums?? when we are famous????? let me laugh a little, come on Barbara, that's funny, let's be realistic. I'm writing on my will that nobody other than my family will profit from my art after I am dead. Whoever wants some can buy some now and feed the artist while the artist is alive. All my remaining art will be destroyed upon my death by last will and testament mandate (hey! I think I will put that on the front page of my web site). The art world is so cruel with artists...wait until we are dead and then have some miserly stranger go rummaging through our studios searching for lost gems? I see on eBay all the time stuff for sale from an artist's estate sale of some poor bastard that died destitute and now some vulture is selling their stuff which they picked up for a dime. No, no, no, I will not be a part of that, not now not ever, and have no desire to go down in history as anything but a happy artist who ate while alive and made happy puzzle prints with her friends.
