In today's mail I received a postcard with "old goat" written on the front in your handwriting, but the back was blank. It looks like there may have been something glued to the back that didn't quite complete the trip. I am in a state of perpetual gloom. I hope you have another goat you can send to alleviate my condition. Or is this a new movement I haven't heard of, yet and I'm the first to collect the "transparent print"? Fortunately, my gloom was short lived and alleviated by a three lost sheep who wandered up from Venice Beach. Ruth, they are wonderful. Thanks for setting me right with the world, again. First I thought maybe there was a print made with varnish, so I held it up to catch the light, but alas...looks like lonely glue :( (that bad, bad glue! didn't do its job). Thank you Ruth for the very nice print of sheep! I love it!!! So I too still have a smile on my face! This is my first Baren exchange, so I'm camping out by my mailbox for the next year. Hi, John, Bette, Ruth, and all! How exciting to see the card from John, ---but then to flip it over to find white and a little sticky. I'm hoping that some of John's flock have behaved, and have gone to their right destinations! To change the wiffenpoofs' song a bit --"Poor little goats, who have gone astray, BAA, BAA, BAA!" The sheep, goats and horses are wonderful! Thank you, everyone! The cards have become the delight of the winter! I feel really bad when orders go astray, even if it is not my fault. It probably is my fault, but I hate to admit it. So, if you do not see your product....let me know! I have a lot of 'tourist' things to say which I will soon post to the After-Five list. However, as far as the printing, it was quite an experience to watch a print in competent hands unfold before one's eyes. I particularly reveled in being a part of the labor division (ie: publisher>designer>carver>printer) in which each person devotes him/herself to the specific task at hand. I know outfits here in the west outfits like Crown Point Press still do such work, but my recent experience imparted a glimpse of what it must have been like in the ukiyo-e and shin-hanga days. Amidst the pigment pots and paper scattered on the floor, a typical proofing day a 70 years ago would surely have been: Designer (who tries to stay true to his 'vision') says to the priter: "I want a little more blue there." Printer (who has the old 'can-do' pride) says: "OK" or nothing and prints an impression. Designer after looking at it says: "The yellow is now a bit too green down there." Publisher (who holds the purse strings) looks at the designer and shakes his head: "Don't even think about it. We can't afford any more blocks or impressions." All say: "Hmmmmm..." And inveritably, somebody would say: "We could do it like this" and through such interplay, little by little the print reveals itself. - - One night, Dave invited a young printer, Ueda-san over to give the Baren a whirl. It was very interesting to see how other printers work (I also saw another in Uchida's/Kyoto). Being a cub printer myself, I soon realised that each seasoned craftsman have a developed style which results in a slightly different outcome- strengths here, weaknesses there. It must have been a wonderful environment back when a big project was coming together. Matching the right designer, carver and printer must have been a creation in itself. Dave of course was doing triple-duty (publisher, carver and printer) and so I really came to respect his abilities that much more. - - I of course look forward to receiving the edition in the mail to sign. But it won't be just "my" work anymore: less pride/responsibility soley upon myself as it would be had I done all of the work. It will be less about the individuals involved and more about the work itself as I really believe there was an energy that just had to come out through the print. I only hope that Dave's collectors will recognise this- and I have all the confidence that they will. - -John Amoss Athens, GA ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V21 #2062 *****************************
