They're Here!!!!! Dear Marilyn and all, 14a arrived today! Where it has been is anybody's guess..... and I'm too happy to worry about it. They are wonderful prints. Thanks to all the participants and especially you Marilyn, for coordinating. Mike Lyon too for posting the prints, though I couldn't bring myself to look at them before my package arrived. I have one that I used to use with my lino blocks using oil based inks and doing multiblocks. If you are thinking of buying one make sure that both the bed and the top bed print evenly. Mine has a slight weakness on one side and it is fine if you want to use the less pressured side as a "directional light source" as it prints lighter on that side, but it can be fun. I have learnt to build up that "lighter" side so it is even now. I have two thick cardboard pieces on either side of the "jaws" to take out any "pitted" areas in the metal and I use it in these layers from the top down: - - top "jaw" - - thick condensed cardboard - - thin dense felt (even thickness) - - (clean paper to protect felt if printing paper thin) - - paper - - inked lino block facing upward - - thick condensed cardboard - - bottom "jaw" bed It is easier to stack everything on to the bottom piece of stiff condensed cardboard and use it to "load it" without moving the bits into the press. Thea, make sure you keep moisture off the beds of the press because they will tend to grow rust and pit the surface of the press. I now prefer to use a Baren rather than the screw bookpress because I have more control over the entire pressure and when I am doing a bigger print, I can lift up the corners of the paper to check on what I have printed, and if not dark enough can put more elbow grease into that area or more ink, etc. I like my bookpress though, it has become an old friend and sits on the end of my work table. I still keep it greased a little and move it up and down from time to time. I don't do very many lino prints anymore, because I prefer wood.
