Baren Digest Sunday, 17 November 2002 Volume 21 : Number 2030 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mary Jane Bohlen Date: Sat, 16 Nov 2002 11:21:34 -0500 Subject: [Baren 19851] Re: sheep Dear Sarah and Phillip, What a wonderful surprise to come home from school after teaching two 8th grades and find your wonderful prints! You will all have to wait till after Christmas before receiving mine as I teach K-8 Art at two schools and until Christmas break, I only have time to just create ideas in my head I really enjoy the "little ones" (K-5) but the middle school drives me crazy! The 8th graders are creating designs for Christmas cards using"soft kut" I am nervous every time I hand out the cutting tools. I have told them that if I see them cutting towards their hand, I will take it away and they can purchase materials to work at home under their parents supervision. ha,ha!. Some of the younger children are making the sweetest cards using styrofoam to make their plates. I am so excited about finding this site as it will give me the incentive to do more printmaking which I truly love. I also make paper and construct unique blank journals which I sell and hope will be the means of retiring at 65 in 6 years. (wishful thinking, but I can dream) I am enjoying all your correspondance on the Baren. Is there any one out there from VA or the Boston area? I grew up in Boston. Thanks again for such a great opportunity. After I get my feet wet with this exchange, I'll have to participate in others. Happy printing, Mary Jane Bohlen Charles Morgan wrote: > Hey, I got my postcards from Sarah and Phillip, too. I have a big photo > album for card exchange prints. Mine is very odd and looks more like a goat. I am not an animal carver, first anmal I have done and it is a bit weird. My spouse says it looks like a goat on drugs. At any rate it will be good for a cherry laugh. Dan your work is indeed marvelous. And for those in 14a, you have the treat of gettin one of these grand prints!! I am not telling now as it will be a fun surprise. We were doing a little printing in our hanga class on Friday and I had forgotten to bring the hanshita paper. I had taken about 6 kinds of damp paper for the students to try..... So I used a piece of damp tableau, printed it and immediately glued it down with rice paste. In the middle of the night I visuaized everything drying and the paper and glue ripping the plate apart....never, never think at 3 AM..... What do you think of this? Is there any problem doing this? everthing was damp, so I hope the image will not shrink or be too large...or any of the other things that could happen. I have never heard of anyone doing this with damp paper before.....you sure learn when you teach....it is just amazing! We are all having a lot of fun here, making christmas cards! But we have to start somewhere. Advise on this please...any reason not to do it this way???? Thanks and best to all, Barbara ------------------------------ From: Lezle Williams Date: Sat, 16 Nov 2002 14:17:45 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 19855] Re: address Yes, I am here - same e-mail address at: laughingcrowstudio#yahoo.com or art#laughingcrow.org. My new address home address is: 1127 12th St NW Albuquerque, NM 87104 By the way - for anyone in the Baren Group.... I have moved from South Dakota to New Mexico and bought two small adobe houses on one lot. The first I fixed up to live in and the second is my guest house and studio. I have been renovating the both of them since I moved here in June and they are both done (until landscaping next spring -and fortunately I am trading print work in exchange for landscaping labor). Now, I can get back to prints! Anyway, if anyone comes to visit the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area you are welcome to stay in my guest house and to use the studio. My location is within walking distance of Old Town and all the museums and galleries and also downtown. Here are some pix- the first set is when I bought the houses last spring - before the fixing up: www.laughingcrow.org/abq.html the second page is one that I put up a couple of months ago showing the renovations in progress: www.laughingcrow.org/abqhouses.html - - Lezle >From: "marilynn smih" > >Lezle Williams are you out there? What did you use it for, how many colors? How did it preform? would you use this paper again? Thanks for the feedback... I spent last summer and fall renovating a big old (1910) two story Edwardian style house here in Victoria. I STILL have much to do ... insulate basement, set up workshop and storage areas in basement, install pull down stairs to attic, put floor and finishings in the Yoga room, put railings on deck and stairs, ALL the landscaping and gardening, etc. Soooo, give yourself a HUGE pat on the back. You are way ahead of me. It looks really GREAT. Now, since you have this guest room, right by the studio, maybe I could just move down on a semi-permanent basis ..... Hey, you guys, I spoke up first !!! Cheers ...... It comes in 100 sheet packs. It's 100% rag and a bit over a $1 per sheet. I really like it. Heavy, but I use a press to print.'Might give it a try.
