What a delightful little print. Your idea of an accordian fold book for the little prints is a wonderful idea! My horses will hopefully come clopping into your abode soon! I too am alread y feeling late (and I was really late with my horses - sorry everyone). Sarah, I recieved your "Getting Fleeced" card too! You have such a great sense of humor. I hope to meet you one of these days. We'll have such fun. ------------------------------ From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 09:32:58 -0800 Subject: [Baren 19834] createx.. Carol, They will work, I think. I find the pigment particles in them large and unevely distributed sometimes but I can see no reason why they won't work. They are low pigment so you might have to double print to get a strong color with some colors, otherwise it should be no problem. I have also used createx...not as strong as M.Graham gouache in color. I tried mixing them with Seibdruckpaste like I do with raw pigment, pastel and good wc and gouache but they were to runny. I am telling everyone that 14a will go in the mail next week. I will collate it starting Monday and include Frank Trueba's work when it arrives, which is promised soon. It is a fine suite of prints and worth the wait. I am due May 25... so it's too soon to tell the sex. I just hope it's healthy and normal! The nausea is easing up a bit, thankfully. I had to stop my oil painting which is really my primary medium (gasp! what a thing to say on Baren!!) But, I have been doing a lot of watercolor and bought some acrylic paints. I also do sumi-e painting. I have been doodling and drawing a lot and will hopefully start a new print soon with one of those. I have to say hi to Charles and thanks for the email. Jen's classes sound like a lot of fun. Sounds like you are perfecting the "leaf/foil" method you had been showing us at Graham's workshop. You had asked where I would be traveling... to see my family on the Olympic Peninsula of WA. Hopefully, if I can stand the ride, we'll be coming to Victoria. Maybe we could meet up. Take care and keep experimenting! Brenda ------------------------------ From: GraphChem#aol.com Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 18:22:14 -0500 Subject: [Baren 19839] Re: T.N. Lawrence Julio - It wasn't as generous as it might seem. I handle materials from T.N. Lawrence, and those that I don't stock I can get in fairly short order. Well, always nice to know you miss a dud! Seems people are being awful careful these days, but that is also the nature of the art festival business: uuuuuuuppppp and doooooowwwwwwwnnnnn. We say it's as close to legalized gambling as you can get outside a casino. It has been a hard season for a lot of artists; I consider myself very lucky. As far as the squirt-prints (Chiclets is my own pet name, after the chewing gum :-), that is also part of the art festival business. I do my own thing and tend to ignore what everyone else does for my own peace of mind. That is not the worst of it, painters are now "printing" their own "prints" right out of their "printers." The unknowing customer is getting an ink-jet print that will fade in a year (if it doesn't get wet first and disappear) and paying about the same as I'm selling my woodcuts for. The art festival world is definitely not for every artist. You have to have a thick hide, a blind eye, a strong back and a tolerance for being cold/hot and miserable for prolonged periods of time. You also have to travel, as areas are quickly saturated (New York and Florida excepted) and people just ask you if you will be at the next one, _instead_ of purchasing on the spot. You also have to have a tolerance for buy/sell products (they magically appear in every show despite regulations), cheap stuff and functional items, which are the enemy of "wall artists." You have to have the tolerance to withstand your fellow artists calling your stuff "peechures," and your customers asking if you have your large woodcuts in cards or your cards in larger sizes. Persistence is the key to getting in the better shows, and there you are in competition with the one-of-a-kind originals and get sneered at by the painters and sculptors that sell $10K items exclusively. Try telling an unknowing customer what an _original_ print is without losing your temper and calling them ignorant. I thought _everyone_ knew what a woodcut is! Once you get into the better shows, good things start happening. But I still like those "anything goes" shows, as some attract well over a hundred thousand people and those kind of crowds mean that everyone sells something. Best advice I can give to anyone entering this world is to do your very best and don't look at the rest. Pays off. Life is good. By all means let me know when you are coming and we can get together for Ginger Tea or something. You should not miss the Japanese woodblock print show at the Victoria Art Gallery while you are here. The alumigraph technique is alive and well ... quite a few of Jen's students are making LOVELY prints using the technique. I even had email from someone who was at a nature printing workshop in France where someone was distributing my description of the process!!! So there is life outside of woodblock prints!!!! (sorry folks) But I continue to plug away at the woodblock prints ... so much to learn and so little time .... Cheers and hope to see you soon ......
