Baren Digest Monday, 4 November 2002 Volume 21 : Number 2017 ------------------------------ Archivist's note: One message deleted as it was a double post ____________________________________________________________ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Sun, 3 Nov 2002 09:28:10 -0600 Subject: [Baren 19723] Re: Let the "FUN & GAMES" By the powers invested in me as Barensuji Editor, I now dedicate November 2002 as "FUN & GAMES" month on the [Baren]. Five years ago on a dark and cloudy night (well, actually I was not there so I really don't know what kinda night it was or even if it was night!), David Bull sent out an email message to a handful of woodblock enthusiasts. What happened next....well, you know...[Baren] was launched. To celebrate such a historical moment, I have declared ( I am repeating myself now !) ...November.... Fun & Games month. Follow the link below to the proper page and find something you like..... some is visual, some are games..some are off-the-wall. Everyday or so I will add more stuff, so save the link and comeback often. Ideas are welcome. About "BarenWorld". I often felt that the strength of our group was the mix of people onboard. Not only oily & hanga, but newbies and season-pros...as well. A place where you feel at home and where you never quite know at any given time who is at the other end receiving your post. I think this image captures a bit of that. I started out with 60+ names of bareners with websites then added members from the exchanges, then some more....it now has over 100+ members..some no longer with us but still having left an impression....watch for a few minutes and if you still can't "catch" your name...send me an off-list message so I can check you out...or in....some of the names scroll and some just pop in/out and are harder to catch. I am sure I missed some by accident. A bit hypnotic someone said.. http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/baren/fun&games.html Make sure you visit the "Thank-You David" page and leave a token of your appreciation. thanks and enjoy........Julio Rodriguez ps. any problems or errors send me an off-list email ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Sun, 3 Nov 2002 08:20:27 -0800 Subject: [Baren 19724] Re: Let the "FUN & GAMES" begin ! Thanks Julio - You are a wonderful editor! I finished all the games - great way to start a Sunday. No prizes? and thanks for the Year of the Sheep information. I just sent my Poky Ponies off into the world and am ready for another adventure. Brenda, I had 4 kids and the only way I knew I was pregnant was when I vomited one morning. Pretty soon it's just a memory with no side effects except dirty diapers. Congratulations and good luck. I have a chanch to go out on commercial boat for crab Tuesday. ( he pretty much assured me of 12 crab for $35.) Wednesday I leave for Portland, have a meeting Thursday night and we will go out boating with our yacht club over the weekend. Than I will stay in Portland a few days to buy some things I want and need. When I return I will be collating and mailing 14a. The prints will be in the mail after Veterans day but before Thanksgiving. Thank you Eli Griggs for your response, I will not wait for your prints. Hope we get to have you in an exchange in the future. These are lovely prints as always. I have never heard of ginger being helpful... I will try that! Thanks especially to Charles for the tips. They all sound good except for the pot! I don't know what kind of crazy kid I wound end up with if I "lit up a fatty"!!! I doubt I could get an RX for it for pregnancy, but it did give me a good belly laugh. Charles, how are your prints coming? Have you mostly been doing hanga and/or etching with the use of your press. Hope it's going well. Take care Brenda Everett ------------------------------ From: Charles Morgan Date: Sun, 03 Nov 2002 19:41:36 -0800 Subject: [Baren 19730] Re: Baren Digest V21 #2016 Hello Brenda, I was not thinking about the effect pot would have on the kid ... might mellow it out a bit ... no crying in the middle of the night ... but it would probably have the munchies something awful ... Maybe you should stick to ginger. Print making .... I did three for recent exchanges (two for Baren and one for another list unmentionable on this site). I have several other sets of blocks all carved, but have not found the time to print them. I have been doing quite a few alumigraph prints lately (that's a technique I developed this past year to allow me to edition nature prints without losing so much detail as in a colograph), mostly with natural materials. I have also been working on developing non-toxic techniques for steel and having a lot of fun. I have gone through a lot of steel plate trying various things !!! Jen has been teaching printmaking for a couple of years, so I thought I would give her a real challenge and sign up for a few classes. I did a mono-print (bad) and a colograph. The colograph was a sort of mobile of leaves and feathers. I tried inking it in a couple of ways, and a simple roll up with sepia actually produced a very nice print. Last class I did an alumigraph of a sort of under water scene to try the "a la poupee" method of inking. I have been doing a bit of that on my own, but a little instruction never hurts. My assignment for this week was to produce a BAD print. I just finished it today, and I think I succeeded beyond any expectation! I also just finished a two day workshop on photopolymer plates with Anthea Bosenberg from Australia ... she was visiting Victoria and gave the workshop out at Graham's. It is good material for standard intaglio stuff ... lines and aquatint are dead easy. But I was trying to use it for nature prints and had two glorious days of total failure!!! I have signed up for an Ex Libris exchange, two post card exchanges, a metal plate print exchange, and the Baren hanga exchange. So far, all I have done is think about them!!! Whew!!!! Makes me tired just thinking about all that. Biting off more than I can chew is my normal mode of action. I need to be triplets!!! Soooo, have you turned completely to wood block print making now that you have "little" concerns for being non-toxic? And what is all this traveling you have planned? Going to hit every gallery in NA before the kid arrives???? Cheers ........ Charles At 04:05 PM 11/3/02 -0800, you wrote: >Charles, how are your prints coming?
