Baren Digest Tuesday, 29 October 2002 Volume 21 : Number 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "carolwagner" Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 07:10:23 -0800 Subject: [Baren 19670] Conditioning brushes and other Dear bareners and barenesses, this is a humble request for guidance from a neophyte. Having acquired some beautiful horse hair Maru bake from McClain's (and yes, I know, I know! I should have gotten them from the Baren Mall because then they would have already been singed and properly prepared for printing) and find I am dire need of a clearer understanding of how to prepare them. I also ordered a "Dragon skin, not really wanting to deal with sharkskin, and Alex sent me a sheet of instructions. I also have Rebecca Salter's book. My problem lies with what appears to be conflicting instruction/suggestions; The McClain's instructions say" DO NOT SOAK THE BRUSH IN WATER', while Salter says soaking a new brush in water for about an hour because the hair may be brittle and break when drawn over the Dragon skin. McClain's says to "just dip the brush quickly in and out of the water very quickly". Is there a contradiction here or am I just missing something that would be very obvious to some of you who have done this procedure? Awaiting light in Sacramento! Others will have more info as I am a novice also...I remember just dipping them in water at boot camp. There must be info on this in the encyclopedia. I will look for it and send it on if I find it. You can trim them with scissors also but it is harder to get the shape , you have to be very careful. Thanks Julio and Maria for helping to keep this annual traditional alive and acessible. The New Year exchange is always great--it's the gift that keeps on giving all year round (literally, in some cases). Before we get carried away with sheep, remember that it's technically the year of the goat (sheep are ok by me), just didn't want folks to get confused. frank At 12:03 PM 10/27/2002 -0600, you wrote: >The site with the participants names is now up. Especially as you are heating the brush a lot and it is wet and this can cause the wood to split rather badly. On the other hand, part of the goal of conditioning is to split the hairs and so cutting the shape with a pair of sissors isn't going to do the trick there. But on the whole it isn't nearly as hard as, say, recovering a baren! :-) - Brian - ------------------------------ From: Shireen Holman Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 14:11:05 -0500 Subject: [Baren 19675] Re: Baren Digest V21 #2005 I'm also planning to go to the SGC conference. Last year I participated in a Year of the Horse exchange with printmakers from China. This year we are exchanging sheep.
