I have a general question to the Group. I recently took a moka hanga workshop and am in the process of buying some tools and supplies. So here I am thinking, who is Gilda, and who did she take this moku hanga class with??? It was ME! She took a weekend class with me in Santa Cruz last summer. http://www.aprilvollmer.com/SCAL/ That's Gilda in the red shirt, and her print is the red and yellow waves! Gilda is great, an experienced printmaker, she is very good with her hands, and picked up on things right away. Glad to hear you are working on your woodcuts, Gilda!!! I concur with Wanda on the tool recommendations for Gilda. Good tools are such a pleasure, and you only need a few. Japanese knife (toh) and large and small u-gouges will do to start, just call Alex at McClain's. You will be amazed what a difference it makes. I would recommend PIGMENT DISPERSIONS rather than powdered pigment. Art Guerra in NYC has them, and there are a bunch of other suppliers. It is difficult to get the powdered pigment to mix with water, and it is dangerous to breathe the powder while you're trying! I mix mine with a squirt of 2:1 Gum arabic: Glycerin mixture. If you don't want to go to the trouble, Akua color is already mixed, and much cheaper than watercolor. It really does my heart good to see all the examples of prints done by our very own Baren members! Since I live practically in her neighborhood - mine came quickly. When yours arrives, take some time to read about their trip to Japan & England & to look at the really nice examples of prints by different people. Great catalog! The class will be taught by master printmaker (and original solarplate guy) Dan Welden. Dan's a great teacher and a nice guy, a lot of fun to work with! If anyone is interested, please email me off list and I'll give you the details. best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V21 #2005 *****************************
