It solved my problem of the morning, which was to go get a tympan for litho at the plastic supply. I bet alot of other people found some helpful information there. I will try reaching her and see what happens. If she is in Fargo, well - that's a little fur. Anyway, we'll see what happens. For those of you who are wondering, why the $%^^ doesn't she just replace the print, it is not one of mine, and is an antique and not replaceable. Believe me, if there were a way to replace this, I would. It is a lithograph that I had restored for my in-laws, and then when I shipped it back to them UPS managed to break the carton and bend the print. How they managed this we will never know as it was well packed and had "do not bend" written all over both sides of the package. I am just sick about this, but now must move on to restoration deja vu all over again :-) Charles and Barbara, you are a wealth of information unto yourselves. Thank you both. Between you and Linda with the detailed (and very interesting) info, the esteemed Prof. Ritchie's pearls of wisdom, and Maria and her philosophical questions, I feel like I'm back in school again. I have to go hit the books for the final exam. (And do some printing.) Dear Nancy O, You can use any washi you prefer... Western papers are generally not suitable, as they tend to have shorter fibers and are lacking in strength... I had the opportunity to try using Rives lightweight recently - -- it looks and feels like fine Japanese paper, but it tears so easily when dry and tears at the drop of a baren when wet !! The ONLY way to use the baren to print even a single color into it is with the help of an ategami (an extra sheet you place between the paper and the baren)... Soooo... I recommend you use a fine washi intended for Japanese technique wood block print making. I think you'll have a much easier time of it that way. Our intention is that Exchange 15 be printed on fine Japanese paper intended for Japanese technique print making. That said, it is doubtful that the Exchange 15 coordinator will be equipped (or have any desire) to determine whether the paper used was entirely hand made, machine made, or even washi (Japanese). John and Charles, I AM very much looking forward to your self-portraits! :-) Of all the exchanges and projects we do, I must say that these relaxed little post-card things are absolutely the most enchanting of them all. The continuous incoming little critters in my "real" mail box is something that is hard to described as anything but "tickling." In any case, I know in the past folks from other countries have had some trouble with the huge postage costs involved in sending 60+ cards to the U.S. and worldwide. I would hate for this mailing cost to be the sole obstacle preventing a worldly printmaker from participating. Therefore, I hereby volunteer to receive packets of goats/sheep/lambs from foreign lands and redistribute to U.S. participants. Please let me know if this is your intention, whoever and wherever you are, so I expect such a thing and can coordinate mailings somewhat.
