I must say you are all very friendly and funny signer-uppers, I spent the night laughing at your emails. "me me me!!!" was the most common format :-) As promised, I will accommodate everyone, so keep signing up. We are now into the second panel! Revised plan: TWO pannels 20" x 28" will be sawn to smitherines and distributed. The underlying guiding lines will remain one design, which will now span the two panels. The print will be a two-panel print and everyone will get both prints. Blocks will be randomly asigned, will contain the coordinates of where your block resides in the puzzle (like a map 3-A), and the orientation will be predetermined (portrait/landscape). (ASIDE: the reason I want to keep the panels that size is because I'm printing on my trusty little press and want to keep handling the sheets of paper and loose blocks as manageable as possible. Once I build a jig to hold the puzzle together, this size will just fit on my press bed.) (ASIDE ASIDE: everyone is invited to witness/help with the printing, of course, but since it will have to be in the summer I would warn that this is not the comfiest time to visit Vegas.) The project now has a home page: http://www.1000woodcuts.com/puzzle/project.html This will be the portal to the process pictures and also as blocks are received back, I will upload the pieces. Won't that be a scanning/cropping nightmare! Kathleen Baker Pittman and I didn't confirm our schedule til the last minute, and we were there only for an evening and a day. She said she wanted us to get a chance to meet some other people, but the schedule was so tight, it didn't happen. The printmaking facilities and the variety of printmaking related courses, present and planned(like papermaking) were really impressive. We did get to tag along after our talk to the undergrad print class to the bookarts class library visit. We showed the slides from Hand-Pulled Prints, and talked about submitting for shows, starting coop studios, etc. We were really impressed with the art department there. When you are teaching, invite us back! Dew Hey Dan, most of my prints of late have been one-color or the infamous puzzles. Also, you're a working man with family to care for, I'm exclusively an artist with self-sustaining cats and wolf-mixes that only demand a walk 3x/week. Anyway, 14-hour days are norm right now; in another weekend I'm starting art-festival season again and you won't hear from me much! Besides, art is fun, that other stuff they call "work" isn't quite as much fun. I feel like I play all day. Maria PS 23 puzzle sign-ups at this writing, I will update the web page daily. I also deleted the @ character on everyone's email address but mine so they won't be harvested by those evil beings who would like to enlarge everyone. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria#mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Sharri LaPierre Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 16:29:14 -0700 Subject: [Baren 19235] Re: Baren Digest V20 #1962 Maria, Your friend is very right - do not fear (though I really, for the life of me, cannot picture you fearing anything) breaking those saw blades. I have cut zinc and copper plates with mine, snapping blades right and left. Do wear goggles, though, every once in a while, a little piece of something will fly up and get you. You get wonderful ideas from your end-orphans. I can hardly wait to get started on a puzzle piece. Like...wow! I took myself out of the participants list so there would be more room. Ideally, I would like to have 4 more people, to complete the 32 pieces (16 on each panel). This will be awesome! Guess I better order some blocks... A couple of interesting issues have come up. One was whether the orientation of the piece would be pre-set my moi; the answer is yes. Each participant will get their little strange block with the predrawn lines as explained. The back of the piece will have an arrow indicating which way is up. The other issue is about proofing. The blocks will come tinted in mid-gray or walnut (I haven't decided!) so that carving is obvious as it proceeds. Now, if someone would want to proof their block, it would have to be in water-based inks. I see a couple of problems. One is that the carved lines won't be "virgin" anymore. I had planned to mount the finished block for all to see. The other issue is about shrinkage and expansion. If a block is proofed with water based inks, will it expand and not fit back into its little place anymore? I will probably cut the block with a jigsaw, which has bigger blades than my scroll saw. The separation lines will be obvious and part of the design. So maybe shrinkage/expansion won't be a problem? Vegas is very dry, so all the blocks should shrink pretty tightly about a day or so after arriving. I will print with oil based inks, which would print fine after a water based proofing. Anybody have any ideas about this? I guess I better do this now, huh? :-) Maria <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria#mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Julianne Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 18:42:52 +1000 Subject: [Baren 19240] Re: puzzle update Hope I'm not too late - please sign me up.
