Yes, lithography limestone is Bavarian. The limestone in most other quarries
(like in the american midwest) has air pockets and pits that are too large
to reproduce a drawing of any detail. Bavarian limestone is smooth like
glass when grained (polished). But try other limestones, it's a fun
experiment (we tried it in school).

It is possible to do lithography from Italian marble, which is also very
smooth, however it contains quartz which does not hold ink and will leave
little white spots in the print.

Orlo Gallery in Portland, Oregon?  I had a drawing up in the show and it's

Subject: [Baren 19041] Munakata Catalog 

I have to confess to skimming the Baren digest format for the past month
or 2, so excuse me if I repeat what someone else might have written.
I've just received a copy of Munakata Shiko: Japanese Master of the
Modern Print, published for the exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of
Art (27 July to 10 Nov.) and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (5
Dec to 2 March 2003).  It's expensive ($65 plus $10 postage/handling)
but it has to be the most beautiful & breaktaking catalog I've seen.
It's hard-cover, 227 pages, filled with wonderful full color woodcuts,
calligraphy, paintings, etc.  The woodcuts are like none other in the
world.  The photographs of Muntkata smiling are infectious.  I'm a great
fan of his work, but there are many here I've never seen.  The book also
contains numerous essays (I've not read any yet; just been turning pages
as quickly as the eye can manage to blink).   If you're planning on
going to the LA exhibit, I'd suggest ordering the book now in order to
be prepared.  If you can't afford the book, see if you can borrow a copy
through your local library's interlibrary loan.  The ISBN number is
1-58886-021-3.    There is no author given on the title page; the
publisher appears to be the two museums.

Hello all-
I'll add my 2 cents worth - it's really too bad that we're all 'bullied' into
making numbered editions -I believe some time back David Bull said that
the Japanese prints were not numbered and were just printed according to
demand.

Re variations - I'm in the hand printng and colouring category so the 31
(plus more for myself) I've just completed for the Baren 14 Exchange
will have to fall into the 'variable' category - I ended up using BFK Rives
Stonehenge and Somerset papers (instead of the Japanese Kozos I prefer)
which vary very slightly as well - I found that when I went back to my
art supply store for more (of the same paper) the colour was a bit different
possibly storage or batches vary in production of hand made papers.(?)

Can we not worry more about (artistic) image quality rather than striving
for technical perfection ? (which of course I do realize is important)
I must add that from what I've seen (unfortunately only on the net)
April Vollmer and many of you bareners seem to have both well under control.

It is alarming to read Print Australia regarding etching techniques recently
and not read very much about safety precautions.  I hope no one hurts
themselves by trying it out without the guidance of someone who has done it
before in a well-ventilated room with breathing mask and safety glasses.  I
guess the nitric combines with muscous membranes and so one's eyes should
not be exposed to the fumes.  Wear safety glasses and a breathing mask with
an organic filter.  Better yet, do your etching at the nearest junior
college that has the equipment.  Although I must say that some junior
college art rooms are real horror chambers.

Hey Dave, the new page in the mall looks great and that Baren Senjafuda is
a knockout. These could make for great calling cards or just to give away
when someone purchases a print from you. Business cards are small and tend
to pile up
in my wallet, but these senjafudas are so beautiful you are going to want
to frame them or have them out in the open.

Georga...what do you have in mind ? Want to split a pack ? Write me
off-list.

Want it to tell the group about this new dvd player I got over the weekend.
It does all the usual things..dvds, audio cd's, mp3 music files, etc....
but it also allows you to play back on your tv Kodak Picture CD's and also
any cd that has jpegs on it.  You get a menu and can scan thru your
directories and then either select a jpeg at a time or turn on a slideshow.
Now as it happens, about a month ago my pc at work crashed badly and had to
be rebuilt. I managed to take my hard drive off and load it to another pc
and then backup my collection of hanga print images (taken from the net)
unto a cd for future use...all 2000 plus jpeg files.....a five year
accumulation of personal favorites.

Well, you can imagine, I spent the night viewing all these print  images up
big... on a 31" tv...so...the pics look pretty nice & sharp and the dvd has
a zoom function so you can scale up 50, 100 & 200% and see lotta detail.
Lotta fun.   The best thing is that this is not a top of the line expensive
brand but rather the Apex AD-1100W....on sale for $63.00 at my local
Walmart. No plug intended.

When I get a chance here, I would like to work on putting the whole Baren
Exchange collection of prints unto a dvd......it could be used to promote
the group and/or as a calling card when inquiring about exhibit
opportunities. It would be good if this could be made into a group project,
with the newd dvd technology available...perhaps even short video
interviews with the artists, a bio page, a cross reference by artists and
exchanges...etc, etc.....could all be incorporated into the dvd..we can
call it:

"Baren...A  Five Year Retrospective" !!! ....(or something like that...)
