Baren Digest Friday, 16 August 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1928 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Maria Arango" Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 06:49:22 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18912] RE: more spam and trivia You know...talking about spam _is_ spam? So anyway, I highly recommend MacAfee's online protection; it updates itself as new virus definitions come out. Its companions Macafee Firewall and Spamkiller are precious gems. As a website owner I constantly get messages addressed to "guestbook" and other addresses on my website. Macafee filters them all by sender, subject, or message text to yield a crystal clean mailbox daily. Just filtering the words Nigeria, Congo and Sierra Leone (with apologies to all the good people living there) has cut down on hundreds of emails. The emails never make it past the server, as the program allows you to read killed email at the server just in case it filters a friendly one. The best feature is that it can send a fake error message so that the address is often taken off the database...until the next harvest. No spam, no viruses. M PS The expression "spam" was started by a comment regarding mass-mail advertising, something like: "if you throw enough spam against a wall, some of it is bound to stick." Since then, Hormel (the makers of the ham-like spreadable/eatable product: Spam) has attempted to sue several companies for copyright infringment and defamation. But the suits went the way of xerox and kleenex; once a word becomes general usage, there's nobody to sue. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria#mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 10:01:12 -0500 Subject: [Baren 18913] Exchange Paper Dimensions These read, in part: "Paper dimensions: Each exchange has a specific paper size requirement; the exchanges are not random collections, but organized folios of prints. The prints must be the same size, both to allow proper packaging and storage, and for efficient exhibiting. Participants should read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly. If prints vary from the published size requirement they will be returned to the sender using the enclosed return postage. If no postage was included, the prints will be held until it is received. " It really is up to you in your role as Salon 14 coordinator to determine where to draw the line. Try to balance what is fair to each participant against what is fair to all the other participants in the exchange and put together the highest quality suite possible. Personally, I think the most important size consideration for exchanges is that prints not be larger than stated dimensions for the exchange. Larger prints won't fit in the cases we have custom made for each exchange. Prior to exchange #11 some artists, maybe for aesthetic reasons, submitted prints on over-sized paper which was too big to fit inside the case. Some coordinators cut those prints down to size, some folded them... It was a pain in the butt for all concerned and personally, I hate to see those chopped-up and folded papers in my suites -- really awful looking! Prints which are significantly (>10%?) smaller than stated dimensions must also be avoided as well. Rejection really is a last resort. Far better to encourage participants to comply with exchange guidelines well ahead of time (as you are doing very well)! This will give people on the waiting list time to complete and submit their prints. If withdrawal becomes necessary, it should be done at the earliest date possible. (People on the waiting list who wish to have their names removed, should also do this as early as possible). Participants who drop out after the withdrawal deadline has passed will have their name automatically eliminated from the next two exchanges (including waiting lists). Participants who drop out at (or after) the final deadline, or drop out a second time after being reinstated, or drop out without notifying the coordinator, will have their name automatically eliminated from all future exchanges." Both #12 and #13 had some 11th, 12th, and even 13th hour drop-outs... please don't let this happen to you! If you suspect you may not be able to complete your prints for Exchange 14 by October 1, please notify Darrell Madis mailto:Artsmadis#aol.com immediately so we can bump the next wait-lister into the exchange. Fore-warned is fore-armed -- if you haven't started your Exchange 14 prints by now, you may NEED four-arms !!
