I tried doing a small one on the weekend, but wonder some things about it. Does this process call for sized paper as in hanga? I read that Blanch Lazzell used watercolors and "inks". What would the "inks" be? Also, is the wood treated with shellac first? If you use damp paper, how do you keep it damp if you attach it to the block while coloring in each section with color? Maybe you work so fast the paper has no time to dry out. Lots of people use the words ink and paint interchangeably....I would call watercolor ink if I were using it for woodblock, so maybe that is the answer here. You print with ink, not paint....anyone else with more knowledge about this?? I have wanted to try this also so may get to it soon. It freatures prints by Lazzell, Bauman, Chaffee, Hewit, Hokins, Mars, McMillen, Nordfelt, Squire and Taylor. The exhibit's catalogue (Blanche Lazzell and the Color Woodcut a Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Publication) is very nice. But if you can make the exhibition it is well worth it to see Lazzell's wonderful color work! I used dry light weight Rives paper and water color. I did coat the wood (poplar) with a light coating of shellac. It was a fun project and when I have time I will be doing some more of this technique. Let me know how it turns out. Jeanne N. PS. I am bursting at the seams doing sooo much art work now and loving it!!! ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V20 #1911 *****************************
