Dew I am trying to get as much of my work done as possible that needs my full concentration (that includes three calligraphy pieces for the Perth Royal Show) as the Commonweatlth Games start in Manchester, England tomorrow and as I am an avid Gymnastic, Swimming, etc fan, I will be glued to the TV! I am pretty flex regarding what is considered a woodblock, but I would think it should incorporate a major part of the print using the woodblock technique. Another issue is the making of an edition. I think in the past we have qualified exchange prints as woodblocks (wood engravings and lino also) and part of an "edition". You could not send in 31 assorted prints to exchange. Some people like to print a key block and hand-paint the color areas. I think that is very much a valid technique. Some mixed media techniques do not apply themselves to making a consistent edition, others do.........me thinks is up to the individual to use common sense. "Geocaching..." Hi Gayle, how's the Geuga Park exhibit going ? Any updates ? Did the censors burned any of the prints ? This geocaching looks like fun, after visiting the site I found a few cache's hidden in my very neck of the woods, literally, a small recreational lagoon nearby that I visit with the kids. Sounds like fun...I think people doing this may appreciate finding a woodblock print that they can take home.... Quiet ??? Very!!!! People are busy, I guess! Is that time of the year when vacations are the norm, people gearing up for the start of a new school year, etc, etc.... I think Maria is on a cross country car trip with family...,Gayle, Barbara & Dan I think are tending to their Baren exhibits....me ? I am just trying to survive the hot weather in the midwest......... I just took the plunge and bought a relatively inexpensive tent to try the local art festival scene. I'm not planning to join the major leagues, like Maria, but just wet my feet a bit. Now to come up with an affordable display set-up that I can build myself with limited tools and very limited carpentry skills. Any suggestions are welcome off-line. : ) Also have a receoption tonight at a nearby library with an exhibit shared with my best friend and neighbor artist. Life is good! Haven't any booth skills myself, so only wishing you good luck and congratulations! I have completed the prints with the oak block which printed very pronounced wood grain -- if you'd like a peek you can click http://www.mlyon.com/baren/grain.htm and be a little patient, as I switched several of the images to transparent gifs and they're a bit larger than I'd like... I agree: life is good, the stock market is bad, and my print is nicer without the wood grain ... - -- Mike 'At 02:02 PM 7/24/2002 -0400, you wrote: > I just took the plunge and bought a relatively inexpensive tent to try >the local art festival scene. Dew It is quiet...I got a horrible virus so am sorry it went out to my whole list..I just paid a nice computer guy $380 to fix it and to put in a removable hard drive so I can be sure I won't lose my stuff if the computer crashes..so about half and half as far as money goes. My computer froze right up and it was very scary. We are all out enjoying the summer and having company....more talk in the fall, Dan! Dew > Dan, this happens every year just about this time. Vacations and summer days have us captured. However, we did go to the Cleveland Museum of Art last night, and along with a jazz concert in the courtyard, we saw the Blanche Lazzell exhibit. She was one of the Provincetown white line woodcut artists, and now I'm going in to the Baren website to find all the material we have on the Provincetown style. I believe it was Jeanne Norman Chase who wrote about it. Lazzell's boards were beautiful themselves. I would be willing to try this style, not just to make prints, but to have the beautiful painted boards which are an end in themselves. I did buy the hardbound catalog to add to my collection of books on woodcuts, as there is much in it to admire and to study. http://www.clevelandart.org/exhibcef/lazzell/html/ Gayle Ohio (USA) ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V20 #1906 *****************************
