Baren Digest Monday, 1 July 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1882 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "marilynn smih" Date: Sun, 30 Jun 2002 09:46:36 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18557] Re: Baren Digest V19 #1881 Information I walked away with from bootcamp was an edition varie (if I spelled it right). We had Jen from Victoria BC in our group and she is a very talented printmaker, who unfortunately is not online so we can not talk with her, nor can I share her work. She did a wonderful hanga wood cut with a splatter. Well splattering ink on a plate goes different each time, so each plate varied from the other, just a bit. She also likes the idea that each piece is unique and does not push so very hard on the concept that each print must be identical to another in a series, so she does a lot of varied editiions, from the same plate. They really do not differ all that much, as the plate and image are still the same. I had a thought to run a 2 color plate with a splatter for the exchange, thus it would be a varied edition. I think as artists we need to encourage pushing the limits and experimenting as well as keeping within the bounds of wood and lino, etc. We already told Charles his medium density fiberboard is OK. To me if it is carved like a wood or lino cut than it would seem we can push our materials or processes a bit and try for interesting woodcut type prints that do not offend. Monotypes are not carved prints and one of a kind flexes too far, it must be a series pulled from the same image, colors the same and such. Of course we are human and there will be variatiions, that is the beauty of art. As for not having done many exchanges, well i am just learning woodblock myself and have not done many exchanges and here I am coordinating one, Baren is inspiring for me. With the addition of Linda Hornberger and Horacio ( I need your last name) we now have 19 in 14a. Now I need to review your emails for joining and make certian the order is right, I am at fault not thinking we would over fill and at first not taking great care with date and time, so a revised list will come out soon. Those not in 14 have first spaces in 14a, so far everyone is in that has asked. This is definitely one of those cases where the artist had to do his best with what materials he could acquire -- as Julio mentioned Gauguin was salvaging wood from packing crates and whatever else he could get his hands on. His marks in the wood appear rather crude, but the result when printed is quite expressive and interesting -- a nice match for the somewhat rough surfaces of the raw material. It looks so nice framed, much better that I thought it would. We used plexi-glas and frame clips, so it has a very clean contemporary look. I tried to get everyone it, but it was just impossible. So sorry if you are not on the list. I did my best with the space we have available here. I put #9 in three frames, sort of like a quilt. It looks amazingly good that way. Thanks, Barbara If your name is on this list, you have work in the exhibit..I will probaly add a few more names in the morning, I am still working here at getting all the tags done. I Yes, but, doesn't this mean you must use also watercolours and make it japa nese way. So, there could be something for western oil based too? And why not wood pr inted like intaglio. At least it could be very nice to do it only with wood (or, I do it anyway, but also others would) By the way, Barbara, I read somewhere in your webpages about using release agent with monotypes. Is it some kind of detergent? Minna ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V20 #1882 *****************************
