Baren Digest Tuesday, 18 June 2002 Volume 19 : Number 1867 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "April Vollmer" Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 10:33:16 -0400 Subject: [Baren 18387] News In New York I have an opening Thursday, July 18 from 6:00 to 8:00: Ceres at 584-588 Broadway (between Prince and Houston). In Santa Cruz, August 17 and 18 I will be teaching a moku hanga weekend workshop at the Art League. In Virtual Space, for all of you eager to know more about how I came to Japanese woodcut, World Printmaker's Mike Booth just published an interview on his very excellent website. http://www.worldprintmakers.com/english/vollmer/interviw.htm Hope some of you can attend some of these fascinating events. Within, we debate the quality of each print we pull. Did Munch debate the quality of each of his prints? Did he throw any of them away? If I had pulled a print like the Christie's print, I might have stuffed it into a drawer and forgot it or, egads, used it for gift wrap! I would have bemoaned the ink that traveled into the faces, gnashed my teeth about the loss of the line in the woman's arm and been disgusted with the increasing fading of the wood grain, if it were my work I would think it imperfect and hide it away...but it's not my work, it has historical significance and it sold for $110,000.00! I have saved all four of the Kiss images from each of the web pages. I will make them into desktop wall paper so every time I turn on my computer I will be forced to muse, a reminder to do some mental flexing...There is something very profound here that is tickling the back of my mind, just beyond my ability to grasp, I'll let you know when I have reached an understanding. It doesn't touch the artwork, but I know sometimes the sneaky acid travels in strange ways." TIA,Maria I've been told to use acrylic medium to adhere any kind of papers in collage and chine colle as it neutralizes the acids. I don't know how effective that is with wood, but since one is made from the other it may have the same effect. You do need to make sure the paint is more than completely dried or it will stick to the glass. I loved the call-out: "The definition of art is always changing. It has something to do with the intersection of money, information, culture, and personal fulfillment. I am still working on it!" Did that just pop off the top of your head?! In the entire interview you were so incredibly articulate and coherent !! You must feel very happy to see yourself through the lens of that interview! Just great! Mike PS Of course, the prints are very wonderful, too! Good luck with your opening and in Santa Cruz -- my daughter begins her freshman year there at UCSC in the fall -- very beautiful place! ------------------------------ From: b.patera@att.net Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 16:55:17 +0000 Subject: [Baren 18391] Re: News April, What a terrific interview!
