I have ordered the book directly from the bookstore, using the website you supplied. I had trouble sending the FAX, so I sent my credit card number in two separate parts by two emails. They emialed me back for a confirmation, and I think everything is going to work. If anyone else wants a copy, that is an easy way to get one. Cheers ..... Hello there, I am trying to print a lavender color on top of a green background with transparent pigments. Obviously I am destined for failure as the green will turn the lavender into a gray color. Has anybody had any luck using gouache to print opaquely. I am looking for a solution if there is one. grazie, Marco - ---------------------- Marco Flavio Marinucci Woodblock Printmaking www.athomefaraway.com ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 09:56:47 +0900 Subject: [Baren 18201] Re: Opaque gouache? > I am trying to print a lavender color on top of a green background with > transparent pigments. I am looking for a solution if there is one. One possible solution Marco ... print that new block twice - first with quite a thick opaque white (gofun in Japanese) to 'block' the green. Then again with the transparent lavender over that ... Might work ... If you add these to the lavender it should work in oil based. One of the things oil based is good for is to print light color over darker one. hope every body liked the fireman prints on the baren site it was on of my fav wood block projects meant so much to me. john center ------------------------------ From: "Philip Smith" Date: Thu, 30 May 2002 18:55:34 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18203] Re: Opaque gouache? Marco,...Have you tried isolating the lower color with something like acrylic matt medium.I think the idea is not to have the upper color sink into the lower one. It works in painting. Just a thought. Good luck, Philip Hammond, OR USA ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Thu, 30 May 2002 22:57:45 -0500 Subject: [Baren 18204] Re: Opaque gouache? Hi, Marco -- I agree with Dave's suggestion -- that should work -- one other approach... YES. Gouache can be used to excellent effect! Gouache can be (depending on pigment strength of the brand) very opaque -- but if you use a lot of pressure when printing -- it will 'mix' a bit more with whatever was underneath -- you can make the gouache 'stand up' on top of the color underneath by printing with a very light pressure of the baren -- but subsequent printings in which that area is compressed will tend to push the pigment in again... Yesterday I finally had a chance to go to the Paine Webber building in NYC to see a show called "A Century on Paper: Prints by Art Students League Artists 1901-2001". The show is big and the work is exquisite. They also had some tools and materials showing a number of different types of printmaking. Ruth, I found one piece that was yours (which looked great!) but I got rushed at the end since I had to return to work - you you have more than one piece in the show? Anyone who is in NYC should stop by and have a look at this show, it's up til June 22. It's in the lobby of the Paine Webber building which is around 51 st and 6th avenue. Thanks for telling us about this, Ruth! Wednesday Don and I visited John's show at the Unicorn Cafe in Evanston, just south of the Northwestern University Campus. John does much of his work with beautiful currency engravings--enlarged! It is an exceptional show, with much delicious color and his exquisite detailed carving. John has framed his prints in exotic hardwoods and pegged the frames. He also brought the proof books of his newest (gigantic) project to show us. He is printing a ceremonial book...and he has most of the hundred large page/blocks complete! What a wonderful afternoon!
