Baren Digest Sunday, 12 May 2002 Volume 19 : Number 1826 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jeanne N. Chase" Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 11:24:13 -0400 Subject: [Baren 18035] RE. Printmaking books Always thought it so strange that we do not have some really good comprehensive Printmaking magazines here. I subscribe to Printmaking Today and find it very worthwhile. Sometimes they do take a detour and have articles not too related to printmaking but in the long run the articles are interesting and sometimes give me some technical information which I appreciate. The articles about and from April Volmer were especially good! Thanks Sharri for your kudos for The Working Proof. I will subscribe right away. Jeanne N. Sorry to bother people with this, but the latest worm making the rounds is starting to impact many of us here on [Baren], and it's better to let you know what's happening ... I received this message this morning: > Dave, I got a virus from Baren today! Please do something to make sure > the list is clean! Actually, although the worm arrived in their mailbox saying it was 'From:' Baren, it wasn't. Here's what's happening: The worm is known as KLEZ, and although it only poses a threat to Windows users, it can also be passed around by Macs as well (if they 'Forward:' messages containing the worm). It presents a new level of threat. It can send a message 'From:' every address in the victim's address book 'To:' every address to which the victim has sent an e-mail in the recent past. In other words, if you have 10 addresses in your address book, and you have sent e-mails to 50 addresses recently, the virus will send out 500 e-mail messages. If you have more than 10 addresses in your address book ... Please note that when you receive one of these messages, the person listed as the sender (the From: name) is _not_ the person who sent it to you; simply their name is in the address book of the sender. And because many of you of course have the address for [Baren] in your address book, some of the infected messages will appear to come from [Baren]. The file that appears to be attached to these messages is a random file chosen from the hard drive of the infected sender. If you are a Windows user and find yourself infected, here are two web sites with instructions on how to get rid of it: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.removal.tool. html http://www.sophos.com/support/faqs/klezh.html Sorry for this 'off-topic' intrusion. Please note that the server that handles the [Baren] list is not itself infected, and hopefully, you will never receive a copy of this worm from any [Baren] message ... Thanx Dave ------------------------------ From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 18:53:15 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18037] Baren Exhibit coming up Hi all, I just got my 62 page glossy magazine of the Japanfest the Portland Art Museum is doing this summer and we are front and center on page 26. For further information call 503-535-9259 Standing Woman by David Bull Founder of the Baren Forum Dave, The image is in black and white and is 1/6 of a page. It looks great! I am so glad I have the Surimono Albums to show off your work! Also, reading further in the publication I see I am doing a talk about the tradition of woodblock printmaking.....wow! that was a surprise...wonder when I said I would do that? Aug 10 at 2pm Reading farther I see the NWPC is doing a traditional woodblock demonstration, also illustrated with a Dave Bull print, the one with the birds silouetted against the moon, on August 1st from 6-8pm. This will be done by Walt Padget, a longtime member of the NWPC who does huge prints, very contemporary imagry. ------------------------------ From: Myron Turner Date: Sun, 12 May 2002 07:19:47 -0500 Subject: [Baren 18038] Re: Unavoidable 'off-topic' virus information ... Since this worm uses an attachment, wouldn't that exclude baren as a source? That is, I thought that baren members can't attach files to their postings. So, if something comes in your email ostensibly from baren and it has an attachment, then isn't it suspect? In other words, does the worm fill in the "From" field with the baren list's address? We have always asked that people not attach anything, but sometimes they do, and sometimes these get through (if they are not too large they pass 'under the radar' at the list server). > So, if something comes in your email ostensibly from baren and it has > an attachment, then isn't it suspect? In other words, does the worm > fill in the "From" field with the baren list's address? Exactly. When you receive a copy of this worm in the mail, it is _never_ sent from the place that says 'From:' ... So it doesn't help to write to that person with a 'Hey, I think you are infected' message ... Propagation of this one around the net seems to have slowed down in the past 24 hours, and I think that many ISP's are now on top of it, catching most of them that come in.
