Baren Digest Wednesday, 8 May 2002 Volume 19 : Number 1822 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bill and/or Lynda Ritchie" Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 07:42:19 -0700 Subject: [Baren 18015] Re: Virus alert Thanks to Mike and Bea for their virus stories. Mine's not over yet. Philosophy suggests that in this predicament there is a gem that I must find. One may be that with "Suzy" down (Suzan's the name I gave that computer) and only "Bug" to work for me (my wife's notebook), I'm turning more to my blocks for Portfolio #13, the "Music" portfolio. Even dreaming about it! Printing is slow at first, and it's a good thing I'm not (can't) follow my plan of documenting, on DVD, the "secret" evolution of this work. I'm reminded, too, of the connection between printmaking and music. I teach that printmaking finds its place among its sister fine arts due to its proximity with performance arts. Many printmakers who do "artist in action" at fairs, or who teach, find themselves in the same position as the stand up comic, dog-and-pony and jumping through hoops performer as they practice their art and craft. Solitude is needed, in fact, for me, for the most part. But practicing in solitude and then being called to demonstrate is another necessity. The three blocks in my print, "Homage to Hayter" are like a musical instrument, three "voices" as it were. Getting them to register is like getting them tuned. Re-cutting a little here is like going back to the instrument maker (me) and shaving off a little to get the right tone. Not only does this fit my definition of the printing plate as an "instrument" (not the "tool" analogy some people use, as in the plumber's wrench or carpenter's hammer), it also opens the gateway to defining the artist in relation to process. I was given an article that strikes a chord in some more ways, too, in regard to what some musicians, some of them marginalized by the mass media world, may experience. It's at: http://www.furious.com/perfect/simonfrith.html Just thought I'd share that. On May 13 I'm giving a free art talk at our local neighborhood resource center--number 2 in a series of 12 over the coming year, every second monday night. THis one's title is "Woodcuts on line: Artists building community" and the Baren Folio #1 is going to be the "star" of the demonstration and showing. It's not an exhibit, as I haven't framed the works. I'll have a notebook plugged in, I think, and show this listserve and how the encyclopedia works. It should be a pleasing evening. Thanks to all who make this possible. ------------------------------ From: Lezle Williams Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 08:04:18 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 18016] Non-toxic video I know this is not woodcut or relief info, but some of you have asked about Keith Howard's non-toxic book. If you'll also give the location of your free art talk, I'll recommend my friend Jerry Vegder to attend. He is a very interesting and VERY well read man -- was invited recently to lecture on Ukiyo-e at Princeton -- (he's very happy about that one, you can imagine). I am still hoping that the two of you will be able to meet -- I imagine that you will enjoy one another very much. Workshops are planned. It looks like such an imaginative project! Some of you may wish to participate/contribute to the project directly, or you may send your 'Tree Whispers' to me to add to the collection when it comes to Harper College. Take a look at the project as it is developing, and consider adding a story, making a paper ring and printing on it, or perhaps you have a new idea! You may wish to have a workshop with your group or with a group of young people. Sharen, near Chicago ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V19 #1822 *****************************
