Baren Digest Thursday, 18 April 2002 Volume 19 : Number 1802 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "April Vollmer" Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 08:33:01 -0400 Subject: [Baren 17891] RE: Baren Digest V18 #1800 News Flash: You can now see installation photos of the exhibition "Iteration, Woodcuts from Digital Plans" at www.aprilvollmer.com That's Sarah Hauser visiting in the second picture! If you missed the opening, I'll be at the show (1 Union Square West, room 501) most Monday and Friday afternoons until May 15, but please call first to confirm (212-679-9393). I also made a page of photos from the opening, if you want to see a lot of people having a good time in front of the artwork! www.aprilvollmer.com/opening The opening was great, lots of people, and lots of good response to the work. It was a great chance to finish a lot of work, I was printing all day, every day. My elbow is not too happy about it, even now a week later. I wonder how Dave does it? I have gotten more particular about paper as I continue to print, and all the work is on good washi: Kizuki hanga, Eichizen, Yamaguchi and some torinoko. I was also quite free experimenting with printing in sections to get larger images. Since most of the work is mandala shapes, I was able to just cut a quarter of the block, and print it four times, rotating the paper to get the circular image. I also made a few pieces by rotating the paper around a small block to get four images on a sheet. I am looking for ways to expand on moku hanga and still stay true to the printing technique. This show let me incorporate all the thinking I've done in virtual space into nice paper and pigment. I wanted to bring the detail and mathematical precision that is so easy on the computer into the texture and feel of traditional hanga. I had a distinguished visitor yesterday, the artist Rebecca Salter, author of that great book, "Japanese Woodblock Printing" Printmaking Handbooks, London, 2001. Very nice to see her, and she is one of the few who actually appreciated the character of the washi I printed on!
