Yes I was jumpimg around with that comment. But another person and several others have said what is it? Sounds to me like you should just keep doing what comes, you are following your artists instincts and finding perhaps a new path, how exciting!! I get what is it a lot and know that when I show them the block they understand better. So I think it is a marvelous idea to preserve the blocks and when possible show them with the work so people understand. Yes--you can read it online free in Acrobat at http://www.artsport.com/apasaebk.html And you can also buy it from me online or from amazon.com or Border's Books. Don't get mixed up and buy Zella Jackson's book by mistake--smile. just e-mail for more info. I'm making a DVD on it now, and I'm looking for "testers" who have PC/DVD players on their Windows computers. It's about 20 or so minutes long, made of 1-minute "sound bites". Kinda fun. Bill H. Maybe I should go to DC, sounds like a great show, I love those botanicals (they are always best with insects!) and Maria, you are an inspiration. I was also very interested in Dave's note about printing over gold. I would love to try this if he has any suggestions about how to go about it. Print in oil, then lay the gold leaf over the wet oil base ink? I have used mica on some of my new prints, referring to Dave's instructions. The only problem I encountered was that it tends to fly up and get all over the place. Such fine particles are dangerous to inhale, so I had to set up an 'exhaling' window fan. The prints look great, though, very metallic. I printed with gum arabic, then sprinkled on mica powder. I have two 27" x 27" prints in the show, the secret, Dave, is that they are very messy! I also figured out a way to print from small blocks, by rotating the paper. Since the images are symmetrical, I only cut a quarter of the image, and printed it four times. Kizuki hanga is the right paper for that job, its tough, with a rather coarse fiber. The Yamaguchi was the right paper for the finer prints with more detail. Anyway I am excited about finding some new directions for hanga woodcut, it's not ukiyo-e, that's for sure! I had been a little afraid to ask directly (didn't want to get to personal) but it was what I was needing to know. As always you seem to be all so willing to help others by sharing your experiences. Your directness is greatly appreciated. Wishing you all the best in Tempe. I've seen prints where this has been done, but don't know the 'key' to getting the pigment to stick on top of the gold. If I were experimenting with this, I would try adding pretty thick binder stuff (gum arabic?) to the pigment, to see if that helped it to stay in place. As for getting the gold in place on the paper, it doesn't have to be over oil-base ink, as I outlined the other day. You can take an impression of a carved area with just nikawa (glue), then lay the leaf over the face of the print, 'float' it down with a feather, then brush off the unneeded parts with a slightly stiffer brush. I'm toying with the idea of a gold-leaf print for obligatory 'fan print' in this year's album, so maybe in a few months I'll have better knowledge on this stuff ... > Anyway I am excited about > finding some new directions for hanga woodcut, it's not ukiyo-e, that's > for > sure! No, not many people left making ukiyo-e any more, and that the way it should be! Dave ------------------------------ From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Thu, 4 Apr 2002 00:57:03 -0800 Subject: [Baren 17780] gold leaf April, I am sure you could print oil based inks over foil, but wouldn't it be easier to just get the foil where you wanted it and not print over it? Could you not do this by printing a block that had only glue on it? I have some great glue here that I use for drawing on prints and adhearing gold leaf to them. It is called "Ailene's foiling glue" I mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with water to get it to the consistency to draw with and then squeeze it out of a small bottle through a pointed spout with a tiny hole in it, I just draw with it. The glue goes down white and dries clear, but remains sticky. Takes about 30 minutes to dry. So sheets of gold leaf stick to wherever the glue is. I just brush off the excess with soft 2" paint brush. I have a fair amount of crumbled gold scraps if anyone wants to try the mica trick using the gold. I think it would stick in the same way. Dave suggested putting powder with it as I recall, to keep it from sticking together. I will have to find that post or one point lesson. Just a thought to try, this is always how we invent new stuff. I know this is a polymer glue so not quite as archival as all our waterbased stuff, but still good. Maybe I will try this on the music print. One more thing to make me crazy....
