Baren Digest Friday, 22 March 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1771 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Daniel Dew Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 08:47:13 -0500 Subject: [Baren 17614] Music Exchange Now that I finally have my image completed and on the block, I wonder: If I didn't sign it, would any one know it is mine? It might be fun someday, after an exchange is over, to show the prints with no names attached, then provide a list of participants and have the group try to match the print to the artist. The winner could get something inexpensive from the Mall or something. Oh well, get ready for a surprise! Daniel L. Wanda asked: > So what's 2003 going to be? Gee, Wanda, I thought I was the only one who had already started thinking about What to do in 2003!! My Encyclopaedia sources state: "Sheep, may also be called the Goat, the sign of art. The Chinese consider Sheep to be the instigators of peace and harmony. Sometimes deeply religious, the Sheep is typically sure-footed, fastidious, conservative, selfless, charming, witty, but also possibly complacent, stubborn, capricious, contentious, and liable to wander. The most compatible partner for anyone born in the year of the Sheep is the Horse." I think they are describing human character here, not "sheep" although the "liable to wander" could have been cross-matched!!! I think there are a few snakes, still hiding someone else mentioned..... When printing with oil base I use Graph Chem ink - cleans up fine with veg/baby oil - whatever- but just recently am using their water base which is very dense and heavy (had to thin it with the water soluble vehicle) the prints are fine but the block is the devil to clean - ink takes forever to come off - had to run water over it and paractically scrub - talk about raising grain!! I don't need this since right now since I'm not using large shapes in my work - it's mostly line - anyway I left my block sitting on blotters and newsprint for several days with no weight on top- had a shock when I went to work on it some more - it had warped hideously (my blocks are 3/4" pine and I can usually use both sides) This has never happened before -probably because I was using Speedball water base which cleans up easily and quickly) - I've managed to more or less flatten the block again but don't like the look of it Does anyone have tips on cleaning up with the denser inks? Either call them directly at 800-465-7382 or e-mail them at graphchem@aol.com I sure they can offer the correct answers. ------------------------------ From: Myron Turner Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 17:06:47 -0600 Subject: [Baren 17618] Re: cleaning blocks If you are using a press, you can just keep running the block though with scrap paper. This version is more colorful, and seems to have an overall different feeling than the exchange version.....was this a second rendering ? http://www.hanga.com check under "prints for sale" (John Amoss) Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: Louise Cass Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 19:41:20 -0500 Subject: [Baren 17620] Re: cleaning blocks Myron- Thanks, but unfortunately I'm hand printing - baren and spoon, etc. I keep taking more impressions on dampened newsprint and paper towel but ink still stays on the block!!?? The Speedball ink is so much easier to clean up but I imagine the Graph Chem is better (?) -it looks good on the paper at any rate. Incidentally, I'd meant to write and tell you how much I've admired your work on your site - the autobiography is great - -I come from a similar background - Russian and Rumanian then imigration to London (U.K.) and Montreal (Que) on each side- many fascinating stories there I wish I had the energy and ability to to set down. regards, Louise C. ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 23:19:42 EST Subject: [Baren 17621] Ruth Leaf's show Ruth, thanks for posting info about your show - I'll definitely stop by! best wishes Sarah ------------------------------ From: Graham Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 21:42:36 -0800 Subject: [Baren 17622] Re: cleaning blocks Louise, Can you or any body explain the composition of the Graph Chem ink. Is it water base, i.e. a colourant suspended in what medium. Is it an acrylic or a watercolour? Have this info I may be able to help you. Graham P.S. I could never endorse Speed Ball inks. They are barely acceptable as student quality. ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V18 #1771 *****************************
