Well, I don't think expertise can be agreeably defined in this context, but certainly there will be folk there who have been doing this for a piece (some even for a fur-piece). According to the survey log, there is much interest by various folk that have current experience with moku-hanga, among them April Vollmer, Sarah Houser, Bill Ritchie, Marco Flavio-Marinucci, our own Mike Lyon is no slouch at the game. Please don't be offended if I leave someone out as I don't know everyone who responded by their e-mail address. We are expecting Dave Bull to be there (he "penciled in" the dates) and are looking forward to much input from him and his traditional ways. Hopefully he will be able to make it. I know he will probably say he will just sit in the corner and do his thing, but what he doesn't know is that I and presumably others will be hovering over him like a turkey vulture over road-kill (gosh, sorry, the Southwest has really seeped into my vocabulary). We truly are wishing for this to be an expertise exchange, although some of us will be listening quietly and practicing like mad-men/women. Since I don't know moku-hanga-jack (my own variation) I suspect I will learn something from near everyone there. Undoubtedly there will be others with diverse points of view attending, so there will be much chance to learn from folks with different backgrounds. All in all, we hope to have a great time and learn much from each other. The survey looks good, by the way, 37 responses and much interest. I thought sometime in the far future, one of the get togethers could be here in Vegas with the main focus being a collaborative project of a "sizable" nature. Can you see a dozen Bareners designing and cutting an 8' x 4' sheet of plywood? Can you see Maria running over the darned thing with a GMC Jimmy? Won't THAT be a print to behold!! It would definitely have to be a different time of the year. June here already brings us balmy temps in the vicinity of 105 F, sunny every day, single digit humidity. But late January - early February...to die for, 65-70 F sunny and clear daily. For the past few weeks I have been reading the messages between the members. I have been a printmaker for the past 5 years and a high school fine arts teacher here in Portland, Oregon. At the beginning of this school year, I wanted my senior students to experience what it's like to be part of a print exchange. I had the pleasure of being part of two print exchanges when I attended Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) '94 to '97. I posed the question to a good friend and terrific printmaker, Barbara Mason. Barbara gave me the name of an art teacher, Graham Hall, who was located in New Zealand (Wanganui Girls College, Wanganui, New Zealand). After several emails between us, Graham and I set up a date in May for our exchange with the theme being "The self-portrait." In the mean time, Graham sent me some multi-color woodblock prints that his students (age 16 - 19 years old) had done. I was able to post them on our schools web site for all to see. The web site is. http://www.jesuitportland.com/visualart.shtml=20 The students did an awesome job and we at Jesuit are proud to post them. The theme of their work is based on the movie "Metropolis" Maurice Fykes Vancouver, Washington ------------------------------ From: Graham Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 21:32:50 -0800 Subject: [Baren 17404] Re: Prints from high school students Hi Maurice, Welcome aboard... An interesting site and images... Have you a site or someplace we can see the results of your 5 years of printmaking. It's only recently that I have made up my mine to do more of what I've trained for. Teaching young adults does leave one kind of empty at the end of the day. I am keeping in close touch with Barbara Mason (been to her studio a couple of times) and am an associate member of the Northwest Print Council. I am planning on participating in the next Baren exchange. Maurice ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V18 #1754 *****************************
