Baren Digest Friday, 8 February 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1711 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bea Gold" Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2002 15:39:12 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16873] # 13 sign up Hi all, The signup for # 13 opens for all tomorrow. We are past the non #12 participants. Since enrollment is still open I'll leave any in who jumped the gun. That's you Mike. Everyone is welcome to join! Think of all the kinds of music there is - I'm thinking Hollywood Bowl - you asked for music and you got it! The deadline is not until June 1st so you have time to get it done. I'm glad to see that Jeanne Norman Chase, who's back and Janet Kravetz Hollander, who wasn't sure, have joined. We have some other new people as well. As of today we have 18 - in addition to ones on the list - John Center and Jeanne Norman Chase signed on. Don't worry Dan we'll make it. Someone said that the theme MUSIC is not his thing. The next exchange will not have a theme. Looking forward to working with the new coordinator whoever you'll be. Have fun. Anyhow, Robert, I took a look at your work, I love it! It has so much character with such simple lines - great! I'm going to email your friend for a copy of the 'zine, thanks for telling us about that too- best wishes Sarah Hauser ------------------------------ From: Dan Dew Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2002 20:16:45 -0500 Subject: [Baren 16876] Large Printing and stuff Working on the large print exchange print tonight, again. (Dean @ Graphic Chemical, I am in love with printing again! That brayer you sold me, what a dream. Oh, I love it! All my ink problem suddenly dissappeared with that roller, oh baby.) Boy, a press would help, but I haven't seen any free ones lately so....... My image is 18" x 20", my largest ever. I get exhausted after 7 prints, what with a spoon and all. But, I think it's one of my best ever, IMHO. Speaking of such, I'm sure this topic may ruffle a few feathers, but I gotta speak up. I've been saddened of late with some of the quality of the prints that come in the exchanges, not all of the prints, but more lately than previous exchanges. Some of them have been: way off register, ink splotting out way past the borders, under inked, over inked, thumb prints, wrinkled paper, etc.... Not gripping in any way about the "image", i.e. format, balance, color choice, etc.. But the actual quality of the printing. I look at it this way...some of my Baren exchange prints are going to be my only legacy. I don't sell that often and many are going into private collections, but not the Baren prints. Many go to teachers, institutions and the like. Heck, don't we have some college archiving them for us to use for teaching? I don't want someone to ever say "wow, nice idea, great format, but what a horrible print job". I am sure now that I have created enemies, spoke out of turn, stepped on toes, etc....but I gotta get it out of my system or go nuts. Sorry, this was not meant to offend, but to encourage, not to put anyone down, but hopefully lift us all up to a higher plane. By for now, I'll duck under my computer for the rest of the night while folks throw things at me. I'll never mention this again. Faithfully printing.... **************************** Daniel L. Where do you purchase art supplies? Do you know of any good internet purchasing sites? A group I'm affiliated with collected money to help a group of artists from Kazakhstan and now they're trying to figure out how to use it. I wondered if there is an internet site they could access to order what they need and we could provide a gift certificate. Or, do any of you have an idea for solving this problem? I apologize for this not being a relief printmaking problem, but one of the artists is a printmaker - does that count? :>) I didn't know where to go for help, and thought it might be right here with all of you generous, genius, giving Baren Members. The need for everyone to participate is to create a memorial in size and scope to be the equivalent of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. 200 prints will not do it, we need 2000. It has to be big to make the impact. The desire is for this to be a strong statement. Anyone who knows Carol's background, or Carol personally, knows that she is the artists, and particularly the printmakers, greatest advocate. Carol did not imply that artists are whiners, she said that is the distorted view some of the public has of us. When we participate in projects such as the Memorial we do more to dispel that erroneous view than all other means of protest in the world. Please don't get your hackles up over a mis-reading of the letter. Please participate in the Memorial instead - use that time and energy to whip out a monotype, watercolor, drawing - or a relief print! I wonder if one could write a program to recognize certain-to-offend phrases and key words and then we could run it like a spell check. On the other hand freedom of speech might suffer also. Some of the juiciness in the writing might be missing. Some people are very very sensitive to professional writing protocol, but I am afraid I am not one of them. I belonged to the National Print Alliance for a little while, but had to cut back on my memberships because of budget restrictions. Their journal was interesting and informative. I think it is a worthwhile organization. I long ago gave up on the idea of getting a grant for anything, even though I am trained to write them. I thought I was getting just the drawers and the rack, but they all came loaded with type. I do not feel right throwing out the type until I have exhausted the idea of getting them to someone who might use them. I would like to trade for a small table press or at least sell them for a chunk of the cost of a press. If there is anyone out the in print land that is interested , please let me know. I can get the case to the US border. This stuff weighs a BIG much. I guess people living closer on the West coast/Washington might be a little better than those in Florida, but Hey..... Here is the "good " version....so guess I have egg on my face and my foot in my mouth agian.... Barbara Dear Baren Forum Members, Prints for the Memorial Portfolio are arriving in a steady trickle, but there should be a flood! The councils have asked to extend the deadline as much as possible, so here are the new dates: (a) Mail your entry by March 15 to your council's collection center -- Barbara Mason 4440 SW 198th Aloha OR 97007 USA (b) Or bring your entry to the SGC conference in New Orleans and drop it off at the registration table on Wednesday afternoon, April 3, or Thursday morning, April 4. (c) Or, if you're a 2002 subscriber to Contemporary Impressions or sending your subscription with your entry, mail it by April 4 to our office -- American Print Alliance 302 Larkspur Peachtree City GA 30269-2210 If you don't have time to cut a block or etch a plate, won't you pull a monoprint next time you're in the studio? Work into a section cut from a proof or enlarge a detail from a snapshot! We can include almost any original 2-d work on paper, including simple ink or pencil drawings, but the paper size must be 10" high x 8" wide. PLEASE read the instructions at www.printalliance.org/exhibits/sept_11_memorial/memorial_portfolio.html -- everything is the same except the deadline -- and print the submission form. (If you can't access the web site, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Alliance office and we'll mail you a copy.) There are about 5,000 artists in the American Print Alliance. But, we won't have thousands of artworks for the Memorial if everyone leaves it to someone else. We need you to take part! The promise of displaying such large numbers of prints (like the Ljubljana and other international biennials) opens a whole new set of venues to us. And any one work is still seen by more people than it would be in a small exhibit because so many more attend the big events. Names of all the donating artists will be listed on our web site and every image shown on the site will be fully captioned. This Memorial can show the country and the world that artists are not a selfish elite. Indeed, we can show the families and friends of victims that we care and we can help many communities see the arts as part of their lives. If you've read the journal, seen an exhibit I've curated, talked with me at a conference, you know that I'm passionate about prints and a stubborn advocate for artists. So, even if you don't have any other reason for taking part in this Memorial, please do it for me. Thank you, Carol ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2002 07:28:02 EST Subject: [Baren 16882] Re: Movable type It is best and much more useful if the type stays in the drawers pied type is not very useful too bad it is on the West coast I could use it. It is getting scare but still is not that expansive yet. recently i could get used type for $1 a lb. and that was sorted pied type would be less. pied type is type that is taken out of a type case and put in a box or bag not sorted. the demand is down as well as the supply so the price is not that high except for rare or type in new condition. And you can still get fonts of new type but check a letterpress printing group someone might want it. sould be able to find one on the web easily John Center ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V18 #1711 *****************************
