Baren Digest Thursday, 7 February 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1709 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2002 08:59:28 -0500 Subject: [Baren 16853] Ring Falling Off the Chisel Thank you, everyone, for your responses to my ring-falling-off-the-chisel question. I also noticed the metal pieces are falling off the bottom near the blade on a couple tools. These are the two-part tools. I stuck a little sliver of wood into those and that seems to be working fine. I also got an email from Graham, and here's what he said: >I think what may have happened is the wood handle dried and shrunk... allowing the ring to become loose and so slip off. >If this is the case, then put the ring back on and wrap the handle... *just the handle* ... with a damp cloth (over night should do it) and it will be held in position as the wood expands with the moisture. You may have to do this from time to time. > >If the wood has split and broken through hammering then it may be necessary to wrap the handle with masking tape and then push hammer the ring back into position. This is not easy and takes some juggling and wedging to get it back in place. > Anyway, lots of suggestions, and I appreciate it. On another subject I'm using cherry for the large-print exchange and it's taking me a long time to carve this one! I hope I make the deadline. It did wonders for me. Still cleaning up after the fire in my studio. Managed to save a few items that were protected in boxes in the back of the building. Even my projector and a few tools. But want to especially thank those kind folks who have sent me paint, woodcarving tools and paper. I will send you all a private thank you. Because of you, Today I am going to start my Year of the Horse print in the small space allocated for me in the garage. The studio is in limbo; inspectors, architects, demolition people, insurance etc. The studio may be able to be saved and restored, if so I will be in business again by June (they say), if not then I will be looking around for a new one. Dan Dan, it breaks my heart to miss the Music exchange as that is where my heart is when I am not doing art. When was the deadline on that one? Mike Also thanks for the people who have sent me prints from the # 12 portfolio. Don't give up Mike, when I was Coordinator I sent out the prints one and a half months after the deadline. It is a job but kind of fun to see them for the first time. I also had lots of room for all of the boxes. Have not been active on the Baren lately due to my disaster, but now will have some time again. Miss you all and thanks for being there for me! It works and is very easy, the way I like it. Carol Pulin from the print alliance hopes for 2000 total prints and so far they have only about 200.....Hummm. Guess printmakers will wait until the last minute...could that be true? Nah...well, maybe. I don't have to prove it to anyone. I am innocent until proven guilty. She has to prove that I am an uncaring whiner. It sounds like she is the one who is whining. I am working on my big print exchange memorial print which is the WTC placed in a California field at the foot of mountains. It is in our minds whereever we are. It's not going to sell anyway, so what difference does it make? People are always wanting me to draw something, like I was a cartoonist or something. I can draw them, if they hold still long enough. I can draw a bowl of apples or drapery on a statue. I can draw the mountain and a tree. I am just not a commercial artist. Just because I am not the best artist or letterer there ever was, doesn't mean I am not an artist. If I had gone through the occupational program the high school wanted me to, when I was a kid, I would be a commercial artist today. But my mother wanted me to go to college, so there you are. The moral of the story: if you want a good paying job, go through the occupational program. So maybe there is a little bit of whining, but there is a lot of caring, you better believe it.
