A quick search on abebooks.com will reveal several copies from $235 to $300. Still a bit much, but a savings of $1000 or more. Go buy one, and you can spent the savings on tools! Jack R. Wood-block printing is very different, >and I'm still searching for the way to make it mine. . . . to which I'd like to say I find printing with waterbase colors on wood is like being able to do watercolor compostions I like again and again--like a favorite chord or dance movement--but in different colors. I like to move across the spectrum of my available colors. I've often noticed this is an important difference between drawing and painting and the art of printmaking. Making the block is like inventing and hand-building a musical instrument (or cultivating one's voice or body to respond to natural beauty). Then the performance begins, practicing practicing, practicing--and the results of each trial are still images, yet somehow alive and loaded with possibilities. Waterbase printing on blocks is cumulative, but without the toxicity that comes with oil base and solvents needed for most kinds of intaglio, planographic and stencil platemaking and printing. Sure, it isn't easy handling the variables such as color-to-binder ratios, paper dampness etcetera--not to mention the drudgery of knife-sharpening and caring for tools. But who says art should be the big easy? Or games like chess, for that matter. Thanks, Janet Hollander, for a great message/intro. By the way, it's none of my business, but I'm curious WHEN were you at Atelier 17? I'm right now finishing a 4-disc set of DVDs that show my visit to Hayter's in 1983, and I'm thinking about adding a little about viscosity printing. Another professor and I talked about the need for a "virtual" Hayter Institute in homage to Hayter, and I'm doing a woodcut now for the background of a print I call "Homage to Hayter." Bill H.
