Jean,
When we were in Japan our Host Families took us to several papermaking
cottage-type industries some between Nagoya and Gero Spa and some from
Oyama...my host families used to call them Paper Towns, or Pottery Towns,
etc where the main industry seems to be allied to that industry.
Especially in the case of the Pottery towns where the clay was ideal for
ceramics and there was plenty of water to work with and trees/fuel for
the firing of the pots. The whole village streets are lined with
ceramics. One town and I would have to look it up was devoted to Bernard
Leach and his contemporaries...facinating.
I could look them up for you. I stayed with host families who had a
smattering of English or our Dictionaries came in very handy! Drawing
helps!
When are you thinking of going?

Subject: [Baren 16809] interesting stuff
I am forwarding this from the prints-L list as I thought it would be
interesting to all. If you are on both lists I am sorry to send it to you
again! So is marketing the key???? Eventually I see digital work accepted in
printmaking circles and thought of as just another media and just another
tool. But that is a future a ways away, there is so much fear around stuff
we think of as not up to our standards.

materials. --Peter Miller

> I agree with a lot of what Peter had to say. However, inkjet prints are
already skyrocketing in price beyond any practical measure of value. Look at
Thomas Kinkade. I believe he's the best selling artist in the USA. He easily
gets $1,000.00 or more per signed inkjet copy of his paintings.
>
> Unfortunately, prints by famous painters or sculptors continue to outsell
works by artists working primarily in printmaking. In history prints have
often been used to copy paintings for mass distribution.
>
> We run the risk of painters losing intrest in traditional printmaking in
favor of inkjet reproductions. The challenge for traditional printmaking is
to establish a stronger following without continuing to be a "secondary
market". Peter was correct about a few super stars taking the limelight.
>
> Printmakers ourselves should also establish tighter control of how
"prints" are marketed. A lot of buyers were duped into purchasing prints of
questionable value in the late 1960's and 70's while printmaking was
popular. Without better quality control shady operators will contnue to sell
more work than those among us who present honest, well-priced work.
>
> I see a wonderful amount of talent in printmaking now. Perhaps the inkjet
has freed artists of the need to use printmaking for copies so will allow
more originality. I've seen an amazing development of monotypes in the last
15 years. Hopefully the future will bring better auction prices for
monotypes to establish a market and pricing for them.

Subject: [Baren 16810] Exchanges
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
Dear Exchange Participants
While I think that Dans offer to send me the exchange portfolio is
really neat and thoughtful, perhaps it would start a precedent.
There are so many times when tragedies occur, operations, deaths, (fires
in studios), etc, that it would be difficult to have the powers that be,
always sorting them out.
You have been there for me and have been so considerate and kind that I
am still overwhelmed so please do not interrupt the usual schedule of
portfolio exchanges for me.=20
Although it was so kind of you to think about it, that is what really
counts.
Thanks to you Dan!!!!!!

As usual, Dave is right there with a useful suggestion! I'm also interested
in travel to Japan. Jean, if you find information from the English language
agency, clue me in! The site looks like it will tailor trips for you. I like
to plan trips myself, but it might be helpful. I was planning Japan this
year, but unfortunately the World Soccer meets there this spring! I hope to
go next year.
Is anyone from Baren planning to go to the Southern Graphics Council
meeting? http://web.utk.edu/~gumbo/
It will be in New Orleans April 3 to 6 this year. Hundreds of printmakers in
one place makes for a lot of energy!
