It takes a lot of time to do your own. I've told about this before on Baren, but for the new people who are thinking of doing this and wondered about it-- I did my own edition of poetry books and handfed each page of heavy acid free book quality paper (by Mohawk) into my laser printer( after having scanned in the woodcut images, sizing them to the page and working out the text as I wanted it). Then I handstitched the pages with linen thread, and bound each book using a nipping press and archival pastes. The poems in the book were those of people in my area who were well known academic as well as coffee house poets. I sold some of the books at a couple galleries and bookstores. It was a rewarding project, but one I grew tired of. If you think an edition of prints can be daunting, try an edition of books! My plan was to make 100 but think I got up into the 60's and other projects caught my eye. It's good, Maria, you have someone else to do the mechanical work. The first few you make yourself are fun, but something happens down the road where the fire of excitement begins to wane. I've not been tempted to do another book unless it's one where I make only a few copies with the actual woodcuts in them (not laser printed reproductions) and then it would be more a work of art in a small edition. I've been thinking about that one, and have an idea that hasn't come to fruition yet, as I keep signing up for projects on Baren, instead, since there's that greater temptation to have our work seen around the world (rather than just in the neighborhood). Have the text part of the book printed commercially on really nice paper, then "tip in" the tiny prints. Sigh. To have the time to do "art" like that. (Maria's poetry book) Nancy (and everyone else) most of us don't worry much about spelling - it's the content we enjoy! I just couldn't figure out what kind of exotic thing your friend was making out of wood. Some kind of amalgamation between a crow (bird) and a bow (weapon) Ah, crossbows! Very interesting. Yes, Baren is a fountain of information on all kinds of subjects. And especially Japanese woodblock and technique. You will really enjoy it here. Maria, congratulations! Be sure to let us all know when the book is published & where to purchase it. I know that many people on Baren will be interested. I've been thinking about a book of prints - ala Masereel - but that is about as far as I've gotten so far. I do have the grey hair required, though. Wanda "N.D. I'd like to take a little band-width to remind everyone to check out the http://www.barenforum.org website. There you will find an astounding amount of information and interesting stuff. Be sure to take a peek at the "exchange gallery" and please feel free to comment on the different prints in those galleries. I don't know how others feel about that feedback form - but I think it is highly underused! I know we are all busy, busy, busy - but take a little time to send a comment to the artists about different prints you see there. Or questions, etc. etc. I hope everyone is enjoying the beginnings of this great New Year of 2002! I hope it brings all of us many joys and much healing. Art is a wonderful route of communication and I hope that everyone will participate in something with Baren during the year. Happy New Year! I know a lot of you are painters as well as printmakers, so here goes: I was just accepted to be part of a project called "Art Unleashed," a similar concept to the Cow Parade except that I will be painting a fiberglass dog, which will be exhibited in Haverford, PA. I'm assuming that acrylic paint will work fine on the pooch - anyone have experience painting on such a surface? I'm wondering if I would need to coat the acrylic paint with anything. Also, does anyone know if carbon paper would work to transfer an image to this type of surface? thanks a lot! The horses were large and sat outside, the wildcats are smaller and stay inside. They were clear coated at a car body shop when completed. The Gallery business is eating all my time though I have been printing some. For all you Northwesterners: We are showing Susan Lowdermilk( MFA from U of O, teaches at Lane Com. Col. and Marlis Killerman( from Germany, bookmaker) Should be a great show. Also, does anyone know who collects Gordon Gilkey work? I have one of the Knight Library prints he made for his MFA that he signed for me(there are only 2 of each, one in the big book at Portland Art Museum. I have been having a lot of trouble with paper I have been using. It looks like Kitakata but is just a bit thicker. When I print on it with any moisture it puckers horribly. I don't recall it ever doing that before. Any suggestion to prevent this? Whilst they look for a new source (for Basingwerk) they were kind enough to send me a few FULL SHEET samples of suitable substitutes. I usually don't plug any supplier because I use many, but this really deserves a round of applause in a world that isn't exactly getting any more polite. Thanks Graphic Chemical, I only wished I lived closer so that I could load up my truck often. This really was one of those touching "above and beyond" things, which, when coupled with the paper we received for the firemen's benefit print really indicates (at least to me) what type of folks these are. Off to Palm Desert now. I used several types of japanese paper to print on, and a range of inks in blue/greens. Then they were mounted on samples of handmade paper. This is most definitely a variable edition! What a wonderful way to use up studio scraps. And what a delight to open the mailbox each day. Michelle wrote me and asked about my address which is missing from one of the two horse listings. It is recorded on Julio's list which can be found at http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/horsesite.html Julio, are you putting them online again this year? I noticed someone mentioned they were going to send theirs out without envelopes. Please don't, they get awfully trashed in the mail, the majority that come to me are coming from the other side of the globe, its a long long way. Frank's plastic envelope was torn and the print slightly damaged when it arrived. Mary K, I laughed out loud at your humour. And Ruth's lovely paper is of course recycled and handmade. Did you make it yourself Ruth? It looks like recycled ragpaper, what did you use? Josephine (waiting for the postman) ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Quite a variety of approaches and mediums. In hopes that these horses make it to their destination unscathed, I would like to request that people write 'do not bend' on the envelopes of the light weight ones. Just to remind the postal people not to fold them while tucking them into the box. *Did you know - the expression 'going postal' is now offically part of the english language, and is listed in the dictionary. Congrats Maria! Sounds like a neat project. Kate C ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V18 #1689 *****************************
