Baren Digest Thursday, 17 January 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1688 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Maria Arango" Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 08:16:49 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16705] query A while ago, our dear friend Gregory Robison posted the following quote: "But more important than all this is the undeniable fact that working with a woodblock takes on the aspects of a struggle between antagonists. The wood is reluctant, the artist determined, and it is reasonable to suggest that the battle of wills brings about a result quite different from those media in which the hand of the artist moves brush or pencil or crayon freely over the working surface. With wood, every movement of the tool involves overcoming resistance and demands the use of a certain amount of sheer physical force. Every block and every subject is a new challenge. The result is an emotional involvement between man and material that, enduring over the years, somehow takes on the character of an addiction, or a love affair, or something similarly irrational. At any rate, there seems to be no known cure." Wow, huh? Anyhow, I am in the process of publishing a book of poems/prints and would like to include that passage if possible as an introduction on woodcuts and my attitude toward this fine craft. For that I would need the source of the quote and, if by Gregory, permission to print such wise words with full credit. HELP! Maria PS The book in question is a collection of poems by a writer who happened by my booth one fine day. We discovered that, unknowingly, we had been writing/creating some very similar stuff. In fact, uncanningly similar, as we were later able to match poem to print without much effort. Some talk ensued and the book was born. It is currently deep in the publishing process. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria@mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Bobbi Chukran Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 10:36:24 -0500 Subject: [Baren 16706] Re: query Hi Maria, Wow is right. That's a powerful, and oh, how true, quote. Since I'm a writer, or an ex-writer, I've often thought about combining my prints with small bits of wisdom . I'd love to do a hand-printed book on handmade paper, but am not sure I can commit to the time element involved. I'm wondering if you're having your book printed by someone else, or if you're doing all the printing yourself? Will it be an artist's book, or something more commercial? It sounds like your collaboration was "meant to be"...good luck with it, and let us know when it's done. I work with someone who makes crossbows for collectors and for museums. He has plenty of scraps that I've started practising on (walnut, some maple, cherry and such.) I've always been drawn to woodblock and Japanese prints and I've found a few on line sources so I'm fairly excited about trying it all out. When I found this list I knew it's a perfect place for learning and a great place for asking questions. Sorry about the misspellings - I will try to be more careful. Yeah, I'd love to do a hand-printed book also, maybe when I'm old and gray and can't put up my 10' x 10' booth any longer (well, I'm already a bit gray but let's not mention that in front of me). This is a standard book printed by modern means, thus my prints (34 in all) will be faithfully but photomechanically reproduced, with a poem alongside. It is a self-publishing venture by the poet, I just had to sign a contract, send slides and my final blessing. I did get a nice advance and will of course get royalties on sales. Not a huge deal, really, but an interesting venture...
