The main trick is to use a large enough roller for rolling the ink onto the block so that you don't get ink into the lines. Well, I tried my first woodburned plate on Sunday, and it was an interesting experience . The room still smells smoky, even though I had the fan on. Never dreamed it would make that much smoke...and that tool gets hot (900-degrees)! And it warms up faster than it cools down... Don't ask me how I know.... Anyway, what I had forgotten was the negative effect, so all I ended up with was a line drawing sort of print. It did print, though, with a very shallow line, and by rubbing it with a wooden spoon. Oh, and I used thickened acrylic paints with it, too. I had hoped that woodburning would be faster than traditional carving, and less pressure on my wrists. The jury is still out on that one..... It's definitely something that I'm going to pursue some more.... Thanks for all your comments! Bobbi C. Anyone in or near Palm Desert CA (Palm Springs, Indio area) this coming weekend, I will be braving the balmy elements in Deep Canyon Art Festival, off HWY 111 and Deep Canyon. Might as well start early this year! TOOT TOOT Warning: On another slightly braggy note, I was accepted to the La Quinta Art Festival in March, one of the best in the nation. Woodburning shouldn't involve much smoke at all. Besides, to get a print from it, you only need a shallow line and a hard roller. I'm not sure what kind you have, but the one I use (Detail Master) has a reostat which controls the temperature. I can make lines and leave no charring or I can burn the wood to a crisp if I want. (This lower temperature also allows you to burn into plexiglass without melting the entire piece.) Also, the tip heats up and cools down in about 20-30 seconds, which is nice when changing tips. You do not want to char the wood. Not only will it make lots of smoke (and can set off your smoke detector), but if you try to clean the plate with anything stiffer than a hog bristle brush, you run the potential of breaking bits of the charred wood off. Charred wood is very fragile. I have done prints where part of the design is burned in and part of it is scrubbed with a wire brush. Where the wood was charred and then brushed, it was reduced to nothing. I believe Saturday March 16th is officially designated as "Merv" day, where Merv Griffin comes down from the hills with his Hollywood friends and buys lots of woodcuts (or something like that). The La Quinta Arts festival is a 4-dayer, March 14 through 17. Y'all come down, ya hear?
