Baren Digest Sunday, 6 January 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1677 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Rudolf Stalder" Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2002 09:27:26 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16629] Large Print Exchange Hi all : Large print exchange Dan writes : "Is it mandatory to mount the lino to wood?" For printing using a press, you may be better of living the lino un-mounted. My two cents Julio : "I got more questions too, as far as I know we are suppose to send 25 (?) prints to Rudolph...on a flat package ( except for those outside the US having mail restrictions...)....right ?" - - Number of prints to send in : So far 25 - - Flat ? Yes, please !!!!!, No tubes !! We just heart about the sad news that Jeanne's studio burnt down. Even if she cannot send in any prints for this exchange, I think we could send her a collection of our work. She may feel happy about !!! Also, nobody appears to have dropped out so far, so the number stays at 25 ! "My press can accomodate approx 18" X 26"....is that considered large enough to meet the requirements of this exchange ? What is the largest and smallest dimension acceptable ? I know the info board says 22"X30" (or 22"X32") ...that's a big difference in paper size, thus my question !" - -The print format is in-between 16 x 20" - 22 x 32" , the mailing format 22x32". (This mailing-format has to be used for all mailings even if your prints are smaller than this size, as the package material will be used for return-mailing and has to be suitable to handle prints up to 22x32") "If we need to stick closer to the larger size, no problem, then I will get on a plane and fly over to Vegas so that Maria can teach me how to print with her truck....." This is of course a very intriguing problem/situation. I think, Julio, you have to ask Maria herself. If she insists that you should stick closer to the larger size - eventually "because of sort-of-common ancestry" as I learnt recently from her in a similar context - you may have to fly. No problem ! Dan, perhaps your drawing is too complex to do this way, but you can trace over the drawing w/tracing paper, flip the tracing paper over & attach to the lino block w/carbon paper in between, and trace back over the drawing to transfer. It works on woodblock and on lino. Sarah ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. I had the Year of the Horse all ready to send on the first but now that is gone too. After the shock of it all ,I came to and will rebuild. Although I sure cannot recapture all of my history, catalogs, etc. I will have to start anew. The studio is totalled, and my wonderful press looked like a John Chamberlain sculpure. We had insurance but of course that never can replace the art work. I could have been worse, but am sure sorry about the exchanges. I am going to have a very small space set up in the garage at home but will not be able to start for awhile .=20 Life goes on, and I have lots of wonderful friends and a great husband to see this through. They will just be a little late and if you are one of the early ones who sent me a "Horse" I am sad to say that your little horsy was amongst the ruins. Mine was ready and in its little envelope , just waiting for Jan 1st. Alas he did not make it!!! luv to you all, you are my support group. Jeanne N ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. I need the addresses or phone numbers of; Rembrandt, Daniel Smith, and Graphic Chemical catalogs. As you know, Sarasota has zip when it comes to supply houses and I need some paper and paint and barens, etc. I am ok!!!!!!! The address is: Graphic Chemical & Ink Company 728 North Yale Avenue P.O. Box 7027 Villa Park, IL 60181-7027 It's not a big deal, but once every couple of months the postmaster gets funky and returns all of the mail addressed to the wrong box number (there is NO box 27 anymore, and GCI is one of their larger customers, but he can't figure it out.) Your spirits sound bettter than in your letter, so that is good. Look at the new studio as an opportunity to get things really the way you want them, not what most of us are able to have! We do want to support you, let us know what you need. I am going to go through my tools and send you the duplicates (hard to believe anyone could buy the same tool twice, but believe it) Will this address work for UPS? Julio, You are always welcomed at my home for a car print adventure! On the same note, prints larger than 24" x 36" don't fit on my tiny press bed, so I do those by hand. I highly recommend the ball-bearing baren for such daunting task, or one of my wood-button barens. I also use pre-dampened paper or something extremely absorbent and soft and pliable like Okawara or any other Japanese paper. The Western style relief papers are simply too hard to print by hand in such large proportions. Remember that even if you get a sheet of Arches 88 well dampened, by the time you hand-print from one end to the other of a larger print, the paper will be dry. I have successfully kept paper dampened on one end of the print by keeping a wet blotter and plastic over half of the print while I "wrassle" with the other half (I'm talking 31" x 40" prints now). Using dry Japanese papers null-and-voids the whole dampening problem. Other than that, larger prints are sort of fun and you will get much exercise. Being only 5'1 and 5/16" tall, there is also the problem of limited wing-span which comes in when you are trying to lay the full sheet of paper over the inked block in a civilized manner (without blurring the edges). I solve this particular problem by cursing... a lot, and also by laying the sheet down upside down at a measured distance from the block, taping the edge lightly with masking tape, then lifting the non-taped edge with two hands over the block. Okay, I just re-read that and it doesn't make any sense but I don't have pictures so you will have to use your powers of visualization. Jeanne, what a disaster, I feel for you greatly. I hope everything turns out for the best and you rebuild a great studio.
