Baren Digest Friday, 4 January 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1675 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mary Krieger Date: Thu, 03 Jan 2002 17:47:56 -0600 Subject: [Baren 16619] Reminder to Exchange coordinators - declared value=zero Hi I have just received my prints from the Flora exchange and am looking forward to leafing through them. Before I did that I just wanted to send a quick reminder to future coordinators who look after exchanges that include participants from countries other than the US. Please do not assign a monetary value to the returning prints. Please describe the contents as printed paper. This allows the packages to cross international borders without being subject to taxes and duty. If a value is declared then the person receiving the prints will have to pay any duty or taxes assessed before the prints can be delivered. Depending on what value had been assigned, the costs could be prohibitive. If you participate in any shows outside the US, you will note similar instructions in the shipping instructions from the show organizers. My package also included a mylar envelope of interleaving that doesn't belong to me. I would be happy to pass it on to its rightful owner if they would send me their address. Happy New Year Mary Krieger Winnipeg ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2002 16:12:45 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16620] flora I have had some off list e-mails about my flora print, so I will follow Julio and give everyone (that cares) the details of my print. Vegas Neon 3 cherry blocks, line, cacti body and blooms oil based inks, process colors in various mixes (I used etching inks since process colors are not available in relief) paper was BFK lightweight white or buff, I ran out of one of them As far as process, jus' a straight forward woodcut. I offset the line block onto the other two blocks with acetate. Flowers were inked a la poupee (still a valid expression when using brayers?), e.g. all at once in different colors. No, they are not hand-colored as someone suggested. Image was a silly play on the Vegas neon colors and our most beloved flowers: the prickly pear cactus. As everything in this awesome town, excess of and artificiality are a big part of the Vegas appeal, I thought I would extend the qualities to my representation of the flora. The model in question lives in my back yard and blooms only once a year in the spring for about 24 hours (per flower that is). Flowering cacti have only a small window of temperate weather in which to bloom and fruit, often the entire prickly pear cactus cluster blooms and shrivels in 72 hours (everything in Vegas is temporary). Summer takes care of making the poor thing look dead until the next rain, usually six months away. I very much enjoyed this collection. Thanks everyone, Maria <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria@mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Thu, 03 Jan 2002 20:46:18 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16621] Re: flora Thank you Maria, for the lively & humorous & truthful description of your cactus print. Really a stand-out print among a collection of stand-out prints! As some of you may have noticed - my orchid print does not match the "Lesser Solomon's Seal" description in the list included with the prints. It's a long involved story - and for those of you involved in exchange #10, you know that the "Solomon's Seal" print is in #10. #11's print is titled "Green Cymbidium" Hanga done with 4 birch blocks and Matsumura's #12 paper. Even though birch is much harder than shina, I still had problems with the fine lines of the key block popping off the block. Argh! I had to resort to dousing it with spar varnish to keep the things from disintegrating while printing. Other than that, it was a very enjoyable print to execute. The subject lives in my studio & while it was outdoors last summer - the sheep decided to give it a severe leaf pruning, it is setting buds & preparing to bloom! Fussy plants, my foot! I would like to thank each & every one of you that participated - and unlike some, I was really hoping for a whole portfolio of flowers. I *love* flowers! As it is, I think it is a varied and very enjoyable collection and perhaps it would have been too much if they were *all* flowers. Many thanks to Michelle for including the collation of this collection into her busy life. It is very much appreciated. And the small but exquisite collection in 11.5 is a great addition to my collection. I'm looking forward to the day that we must have one baren exchange & a full 30 in the Salon d'refuse! Wonderful stuff! Wanda ------------------------------ From: Juan Guerrero Date: Thu, 03 Jan 2002 23:24:10 -0600 Subject: [Baren 16622] RE: Baren Digest V18 #1674 DEAR BARENERS, Hii from Mexico.
