I was beginning to wonder about the sense of community here....!!! You have restored my faith. Graham ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 16:14:20 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16188] product report I've been trying some stuff and thought that I would report, maybe y'all find this useful. Art Boards http://www.art-boards.com These folk make two types of boards for artists, suitable for woodcuts. They carry cradled and uncradled maple plywood boards in various sizes and also a board made of pressed wood fiber. The maple boards are beautiful and are ready to carve. The top layer is maple, which means it holds a very fine line and resists splintering; however it is a thin layer over softer wood, which means that it is much easier to carve than solid maple. The other boards, fiber boards are so easy to carve that they are very suitable for school work for all you teachers, I would think. They carve easier than lino but have more personality (IMHO) and, being made out of wood, they take wood filler on mistakes. Not that I ever make mistakes :-} I'm still a solid cherry gal, but these boards are a very nice substitute and are much cheaper and lighter than cherry. Walnut Ink I have finally found the ideal ink to tint my boards with, available from http://www.danielsmith.com Their drawing Walnut ink tints the block to perfection and gives it a nice warm tone. After carving and printing the edition, I use the ink as a stain to finish the block. Beautimoussss!!! Corian Oh baby! This stuff engraves (for engravers only, sorry) absolutely dreamily and prints such tinsy winsy detailsy that I think I'm in love. Definitely superior to resingrave and MUCH cheaper, especially where I get it. Corian is available everywhere you shop for kitchen stuff, but I would recommend going to your nearest art festival where the Corian businesses are flourishing. An 8 x 10 board (inches) cost me 12.99 (US $), compared to $120 for an end-grain maple board or $55 for a resingrave board. If you make friends with your local Corian folk, you can have smaller pieces to your heart's delight, as they don't use the scraps. I just printed a set of 2" x 3" truly adorable engravings and the ink releases perfectly yet all the details are right there where I carved them. Post Cards from the Baren Mall http://barenforum.org/mall For all you horse people, get yourself a few sets of these delightful pre-cut packs of Japanese size post-cards. I printed the aforementioned engravings on these and they take the oil-based ink like Arches 88. As they are specifically made for Hanga (New Year's cards), I assume that they will be even better for all you watery folk. This has been the product report, brought to you by Las Vegas. As for the weather report, it is 72 F, partly cloudy and windy but with no chance of rain until next February or so. The trailer is loaded, the roads are clear, and I'm off to the North to sell woodcuts to Santa. Health to all, Maria ------------------------------ From: barebonesart Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 22:51:18 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16189] Re: Baren Digest V17 #1623 One site for price comparison shopping is http://www.MySimon.com. I don't know if they have digital cameras, but I'm betting they do. They have everything else! The fireman is cut. Now all I need is time to print. A few more proofs in the morning and then maybe I can print on Sat. & Sun. I think this is to be an edition of 31, or is that a different project? Also, is it okay to make the edition larger and send Baren the first 31 (or whatever the number is)? Sharri ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V17 #1624 *****************************
