I knew nothing about the digital cameras then, but was I lucky! It's perfect for me. I've met a lot of other people who own them--they're something of a "standard" I've noticed. Which is handy when you hand it to someone and say, "Would you please take a snapshot of me . . ." and they know how. Once I even handed it to the wait person at a restaurant, and it was no problem. What's best IMHO is the fact it uses an ordinary old 3 1/2 inch floppy, which makes it easy for you to take a snapshot, hand the disc to someone as a gift, and forget about it. It'll open on their computer. No need for special software, etc. Probably it will open at your Local Kinko's, too, or the numerous Kodak processing services if prints is what you want. This is no doubt true of other mfrs as well, but I'm not one to dwell on technologies. I just want another good instrument for multimedia arts. I've taken over 350 pictures of my pictures to develop a visual database of my art, you can see it at www.myartsport.com. The pictures are low-resolution, though, not the high resolution you get from the original Sony Mavica system. Sony also makes a JUMBO Mavica system which doubles as a video AND still camera--but it's three times the price. I mention ti because maybe your family is in the market for a digital video camera, and this one would serve you for both purposes (but it uses a flash memory card instead of the floppy). I am 100% satisfied with my Mavica, and I think you would be, too, all things considered. Bill H. Presses that are over five years old don't tend to lose value the way a car would. If you bought it used, or had it given to you, you'll need to give me a rough estimate on age, and the size of the bed as well as any other unique characteristics, and I can give you an idea. It includes good advice on assessing your camera needs (pointing out that maximum megapixels are necessary for all needs), and tests and reviews of 26 cameras. Of course, the article is relevant even if you don't have a Mac. Apple do not offer this in any computers and haven't for two maybe three years. I don't know what Windoz is up to ... probably copying Apple ... as usual. We have had several inquiries lately at the Northwest Print Council, people asking for etching presses. Send the information to: nwpc@pacifier.com and ask them to place the ad in the newsletter. It is due to go out soon, so if you get it to Gillian right away you will make this issue. Could be a buyer in there just waiting for you. I have an Epson Photo PC 800 digital camera and it is great. I think I paid about $800 several years ago. They are probably less now. It takes fantastic pictures, most people can't believe they are from a digital camera, and that is set on the middle resolution. Batteries are not a problem and last for several months and many, many exposures. They go in a hurry only if I forget and leave the camera turned on :>) Sharri ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V17 #1622 *****************************
