Baren Digest Wednesday, 26 September 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1567 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sunnffunn@aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 13:21:52 EDT Subject: [Baren 15769] Re: Baren Digest V16 #1566 I guess I did not get my name in fast enough to participate in the benefit exchange for the fire fighters. I have not heard the rules and must assume you have limited the number as you have with former exchanges. I had not opened the email fast enough to be able to respond before the event seems to have closed. Well the linoleum I purchased can be used elsewhere. Good luck and hope you raise a lot of funding monies. I realize I am not well known on this group and have done onnly one exchange, so I guess the better of you andthe better known of you are best anyway for this. This is not an exchange, but as I understand it, a donation of prints to the cause of benefiting the rescue workers of the WTC. The more the merrier, the way I see it. Someone correct me if I am wrong, please. If we wait for emotions to gel, as someone else proposed, so will the emotions of our collectors. This past weekend at the art festival, everyone was looking for the picture of the firemen raising the flag; next weekend, might be a different story. Next month, people will be shopping for Halloween costumes and Thanksgiving dinner makings instead. I know we are targeting a different audience than the popular crowd, but nevertheless...Since we are planning on selling the sets, time is of the essence. As you can imagine, products remembering this event will pop up in the world market quickly, soon flooding the market. I don't imagine that fine print sets will be emerging in vast quantities, but you betcha there are posters and collections of photographs and books...and I have already seen several other artist projects popping up in the online art world. Just my two cents. I agree with John Center, the proposer of this project, that the sooner the better. I cannot remember if a deadline has been established as of yet, but we should have one or we will be mailing/receiving prints until the cows come home with no end in sight. One-year anniversary is a fine time to have an exhibit, but we should NOT make that the deadline for the prints. I would propose end of this year for a deadline at maximum. This event interrupted and jumbled the lives of many, who had to put all else aside to search through the rubble. Perhaps we printmakers can also put things aside for a few days to make the work to honor them. Make a print from the gut while your gut is riled. Again, just my humble opinion, I am but a mere participant. I have already finished the key block and intend to do the color ones today and tomorrow. I intend to give some to local fireman who have been collecting in the Chicago area. I will be at an artist book fair (and letter press printers) in October 25, 2001, in the twin cities at the Min. center for book arts I will be taking my prints to this would be most pleased to take any copies of other benefit prints as well. It would be a wonderful thing if any or all prints were sold in many different locations. If anyone has a location to sell them either as single copies or as the complete portfolio feel free to suggest it or ask for individual copies of my print, etc. My intention was to have 31 complete portfolios and any additional prints as well. I will be printing many more than the 31 that figure was chosen as the min. because many people print by hand and I did not want to leave anyone out. I am going to try to drum up a patron to purchase the portfolio in = my area, but with the hopes that they will donate the whole set to the = local firemen of this city. I'm sure some people would want to keep the = portfolio if they were going to dish out the money for it, but I think it = would be great if the stations in several communities could cover their = walls with work of this nature. In this way, we are not just doing = something to benefit those who were part of the NYC tragedy, but also for = those who put their lives on the line (for all of us) every day. There is not a severe time limit. You have tiime to do the print, I think John wants them right away so we can start marketing them, but exhibitions are not set yet.
