Baren Digest Sunday, 23 September 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1564 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Eger Womack" Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 07:08:19 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15752] exchanges Dear Baren friends, I tried to drop out of two print exchanges, but the print exchange people have kept me on the list, for whatever reason, I don't know. Because I am now teaching high school art, first year, I am in over my head in paper work. The school wants us to teach English roots and prefixes, as well as art, in order to raise the students' vocabularies. State and, I presume, city standards demand we teach art elements and art principles, which are design, while keeping the course fine art, which means student choice on what subject to paint. So I have been trying to design lessons for that. The vice principal wants a blackboard configuration which includes a "warmup," i.e., something for the students to do when they come into the room. I have been giving them some assignments in writing to hand in, because writing is their strength, while I give weekly drawing assignments to un-traumatize them from drawing.freely. All this has created a mountain of paperwork which occupies every spare moment when I am not taking night courses in cartooning, basket-making, etc, to expand the art choices which I can teach them. At least teach the ones who are not busy disrupting the class so as to prevent the others from learning all this useful information. Then my teachers textbook which I purchased online from Follett was stolen. On the up side, none of my students have been injured, and I haven't been, either. I send students out of the room who hit other students or me. Except for one student who hit another student with his notebook and I'll keep an eye on him this coming week. I'm talking about high school here, not kindergarten. It sends the adrenaline going, and there seems to be nothing wrong with my adrenaline glands, thank goodness. Realistically I might be late for one or another print exchange, if I manage to get anything in at all. I want to keep my good name in this print group and not get a bad reputation for not coming through on exchanges. That is why I tried to drop out of #10, I think it is, and the big print exchange. I will be demonstrating Hanga style printmaking using water-based inks at Cabrillo College on October 27. You can contact Karen Tossavainen at that college if you want to attend. I don't know if she will open it to professional printmakers, but maybe. That caused me to resubscribe using my own address www.jeaneger.com. Then they recanted and decided to use the landminds address after all. So now I am getting twice as many listserves. So please take me off the Baren list under the name jeaneger@lanminds.com name. Thanks. Also please change my address in your records to http://www.jeaneger.com and jeaneger@jeaneger.com Thanks. Needless to say, the international group I was with was united in horror at the audacity of the terrorists, and even though our meeting was finished the morning of the 11th, many stayed on an extra day or two because of the disruption in travel, world-wide, so we had interesting conversations with many differing viewpoints expressed. My husband and I had plans to spend an additional week in Europe touring France and Switzerland with sketchbook in hand, but were forced by our somber mood to cut short many of the things we had wanted to do. I came home yesterday (21st) with only 2 small pastel sketches (usually I do 10 or more per day when we are travelling). I would like to be included in whatever exchange or exhibit you come up with for remembering those lost on that day of horror. I agree that perhaps setting the date for the 1 year anniversary seems appropriate, and gives time for emotions and artistic impulses to gel for some great creations. It would allow me time to join in this effort too. So, if 1 year is agreed upon please count me in too. ------------------------------ From: barebonesart Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 15:30:44 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15758] Re: Baren Digest V16 #1563 Tim, I have printed both etchings and woodblocks on linen, canvas, muslin, you name it. The only prerequisite is that the fabric be all or mostly cotton. Man-made fibers are non-absorbent. It works best if the fabric is slightly moist - not even to the point of being damp, I mean really just slightly moist. I mist it with a sprayer and keep it in plastic, loosely covered. But, you can also use it dry, it just doesn't pick up as much ink. Then you need to sandwich it between two boards and stomp on it, if you don't have the luxury of a press. It takes much more pressure than just burnishing to get a good print. Put on some good stompin music before you start to print and you're guaranteed success - Sharri ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 21:08:20 EDT Subject: [Baren 15759] Re: Print Project I have already cut the key block my intent is to get it printed ASAP the main goal was to benifit the fireman. the idea for three months was to give people time to do it. On a personal level i will be printing it this week and give them to local fireman who were collecting here. The idea of showing them and sell them as a group will take time to organization etc. It will take time to organize shows as galleries have longer time frames but PLEASE don't make that the time frame for printing.. as we can sell them before the date of any show.
